Derby spent BIG in the summer as they chase the Premier League dream, bringing in familiar faces such as Bradley Johnson, Thomas Ince, Andreas Weimann and Darren Bent and slightly less familiar but equally lucrative ones such as Jason Shackell, Jacob Butterfield and Scott Carson.

It was what is known in the trade as a massive overhaul.

It started well too, the Rams losing just twice in the league until Christmas. But a run of one win in six, and a 4-1 thumping at Burnley on Monday night, has threatened to derail the Derby promotion train.

  3. 'LVG can't afford to lose'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2016

    Steve Wilson
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"The FA Cup could be a welcome distraction for both sides as the prospect of 'concentrating on the league' is not appealing just now.

"Whilst Louis van Gaal is being castigated for a run of two Premier League victories in the last 10 games and trying to keep a lid on a simmering Old Trafford revolt, life has not been much easier for Paul Clement.

"Derby were top of the Championship on Boxing Day, but two points from five games since then has left them fifth.

"There's one very big difference though: Clement knows he can afford to lose this game - Van Gaal will not be so sure."

Will he? Won't he? Did he? Should he? Might he?

Whether Louis van Gaal offered to resign as Manchester United manager or not, his immediate future is not looking especially certain.

With the FA Cup still up for grabs and a place in the top four just out reach - currently - this is a critical point in United's season.

Derby County haven't won an FA Cup tie against Manchester United since February 1897.

That was before promotion and relegation was invented, before Dracula was printed, when the Wright brothers were still messing about with bikes and Albert Einstein was failing exams in Zurich.

Manchester United have lost just one of their last 44 FA Cup games against lower-league opposition, falling at home to Leeds in January 2010.

It's been a long old wait then - is tonight the night?

Sometimes a manager comes under pressure because of performances. Often a manager comes under fire for poor results.

Louis van Gaal is flying the perfect storm of both. And perhaps most damningly of all, has the Dutchman produced a boring Manchester United?

United have won just seven of their last 22 competitive matches (W7 D9 L6) and have scored less than a goal a game on average during this run (21 goals in 22 games).

    Turn-offs.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal came out swinging at his news conference this week, angrily denying stories that he had offered to resign.

What he probably didn't want in his in-tray is a Friday night FA Cup game live on BBC One away at a high-flying, big-spending Championship side keen to cause an upset.

Will he be facing even more questions about his future tonight?
