The Juventus man, running in like a train, smashes a volley straight at the goalkeeper.

"Romania have done very well since the opening minute. They have played with such intensity. I don't want to insult France but it's like watching England. They've got all these great attacking players but they are playing in their own half."

And that change Gary Lineker mentioned in the last post may come sooner.

Olivier Giroud hasn't got his scoring boots on today, finding a yard inside the box, but his tame shot is straight at goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.

That's France's first shot on target.

Romania start the half on the front foot and allowing the unconvincing Adil Rami to do some work.

The Sevilla man does well on this occasion, getting across his man to cover the ball.

Daniel Woodley: The save from Hugo Lloris is the highlight of that half. Intensity from #ROU, external impressive. #FRA, external static. Need an injection of pace.

Kashif Khan: I can't see France scoring as long as Olivier Giroud is on the field. Bring on Anthony Martial.

Mwansa Lombe Kaluba: Romania are showing France and everyone that they qualified for a reason. Not push overs.

"I thought at the beginning France were going to be on the front foot and terrorise Romania's defence. What do France do to change that? Is it a game for Anthony Martial to unlock a defence that doesn't concede a lot of goals?"

Plenty of French possession in that first half, but as the heatmap shows, there was precious little inside the Romania box. In fact, the vast majority was in France's own half.

So far, so frustrating for France and their vociferous fans. There have been flashes of what we know their players are capable of, but Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann have missed the chances that have come their way. 

On the upside, it could have been a lot worse if not for that brilliant early stop by Hugo Lloris, but France badly need a goal to bring Romania out of their shells.

"France haven't controlled the midfield like I expected them to. Maybe they should bring on Yohan Cabaye. He might put his foot on the ball and slow the game down. It's been a little bit rushed at times. The high line Romania have played is very brave. France have not tried to break it enough."

Just like that, the first half in the opening game of Euro 2016 comes to an end. Romania will be the happier side as they keep the hosts at bay, but they should have a goal to their name.
