Goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima makes his long delayed Dundee United debut in the derby. Sean Dillon and Blair Spittal are recalled with Mark Durnan suspended and Callum Morris injured.
Dundee striker Greg Stewart is also banned so young Cameron Kerr gets a start for the Dark Blues.
It's the second Dundee derby of the season with the sides having drawn 2-2 back in August.
Since then, United have struggled to pick up many points and are currently 10 points adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.
Dundee are ninth - 13 points ahead of their city rivals.
