Manchester United

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: "Of course it feels like a defeat. 

"We have given it away – I have told that to my players. When the referee gives a penalty for nothing – it is a duel I think and you cannot decide who is worse –  but we gave it away. 

"We could have scored six goals easily here and we did not. If we had, it would have been three successive wins at the start of the year going into Liverpool.

"It is not so interesting to create chances. In every press conference I say you have to score one more goal than the opponent."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde: "We suffered so much in the previous weeks and today we are very happy. Definitely the players showed pride and we deserved to win. 

"We won only 1-0 but we created many good opportunities. We earned our luck by being very aggressive on the ball. We didn't sit back after we scored, we tried to score a second. We had a very good attitude. 

"It was a nice feeling to feel the crowd behind the players, it's very important. We cannot be happy too long - we have to build on this one."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren: "The crowd responded magnificently and we wanted to show everyone what we are about. People said that United were boring and that we lack character – but we kept fighting unti the end and we have got a goal that feels like a winner. People thought it would be a 0-0 and it was a classic at 3-3. It must have been a great game for the neutral – it was a heart attack for the coaches.

"Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet are both Newcastle type players – right age, right character – and with players coming in to add to our quality that shows what we are about."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe says he is still looking to strengthen 'in one or two positions'. More to come?

Manchester United

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney: "It does feel like a defeat. After scoring three good goals, it was maybe a lack of concentration - not staying with runners for the third - and that is disappointing. 

"If you take a two-goal lead, we should be taking all three points and killing the game off. We didn’t take all our chances and we have been punished for it.

"We always want to try and play entertaining attacking football that is what we work on and try and do, and hopefully we can come up with more solutions."

Newcastle United

Newcastle's Paul Dummett: "I didn’t know what to do when I scored. It is the best feeling in the world. 

"In the last five games we have done well, creating lots of chances and going down to narrow defeats. It could have been the same again today, but we kept on fighting."

West Ham sure do. Dimitri Payet is back from injury and back in business. He scored a wonderful goal and made a great assist too.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew: "A lot of things went wrong. We lacked energy, we lacked quality, one of our poorest displays of the season. Villa really deserved their victory - they worked so, so hard. 

"We couldn't find an offensive link-up. Wayne Hennessey will obviously be disappointed with the goal - he got himself in a mess. But he's been terrific for us and that's the nature of goalies."

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was sidelined for his side through illness but still enjoyed the win... 

It's almost forgotten in the aftermath of that cracker that Newcastle remain in the bottom three in the Premier League. You would not have guessed it from that performance, particularly in the second half. With Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet to come in too are bright times ahead?
