Another United player booked - this time Michael Carrick lunges in on Yann M'Vila near the half-way line. Again he is late, again he is shown a yellow card.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 58 mins

    Sunderland 1-1 Man Utd

United are not just defending - both their full-backs are getting forward well, but they are getting crowded out when they try to attack through the middle. That is exactly what happens to Juan Mata here, and he is booked after catching Yann M'Vila late while he tries to win the ball back.

"I cannot believe that ball has not gone in.

"It is a great ball by Cattermole. It was going in, Blind didn’t know much about it but it worked.

"That was definitely a goal saving tackle."

Here come Sunderland again, and this time they go very close to retaking the lead.

Patrick van Aanholt's delicious low cross from the left finds Jermain Defoe running in at the near post and his flicked finish looks like it is going in, if not for Daley Blind who slides in to put the ball behind.

There were some shouts for a penalty when Wayne Rooney cleared that free-kick and the replays show why - the ball hit his hand, which was in front of his face, after zipping over John O'Shea's head. That would have been pretty harsh if it had been given.

Wahbi Khazri whips it in, aimed for John O'Shea at the near post, but Wayne Rooney is there to head behind. A couple more dangerous deliveries by Khazri cause United's defence some problems, but they eventually clear and only a poor pass stops Anthony Martial from breaking away down the left.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 46 mins

It takes Wayne Rooney about 40 second-half seconds to go into Andre Marriner's book, for tripping Lee Cattermole after losing possession.

Sunderland duo John O'Shea and Deandre Yedlin were both booked in the first half.

A point is not much good for either team by the way... United would stay fifth, five points off the Champions League places. Sunderland would stay second-bottom, three points off safety.

Mannone at fault for United's goal - or harsh on the Italian?

Nzechukwu Jero: Vito M poor reflexes contributed to Man U's equalizer. Cech has recovered from such positions to save a second shot.

Viv: Not sure what catch technique Vito was using there but good equaliser from Martial.

Serge Tchwenko: Mannone was awfully slow getting back up on the Martial goal. Hasn't exactly been a pillar today.

Here is that first-half in graphical form. United have dominated possession, and got into the final third plenty of times... but it did take them 30 minutes to even have a shot. They ended on a high note with their equaliser, though.
