Who was to blame for Sunderland's goal?

John Dunthorne: Maybe De Gea at fault, but difficult to be too critical

Charles Kahanji: You wouldn't want to trail early on when you are playing a team managed by Big Sam

Bob: You can't blame the keeper! Defoe jumps over the ball, and the wall capitulates. Good goal well planned.

Yep, Jan Kirchhoff is off - or should that be hoff? Anyway, Jack Rodwell is on to take his place in Sunderland's midfield.

It looks like it is Jan Kirchhoff's hamstring that is the problem. He is off the field now, and the game is continuing with Sunderland down to 10 men.

Sunderland's turn to have an injury problem. Jan Kirchhoff clears a Daley Blind corner, but then signals to the bench that he is in trouble before going to ground for treatment.

Manchester United are still seeing a lot more of the ball but it is Sunderland who look more like scoring again at the moment.

Patrick van Aanholt's perseverance gets him into the box and only a succession of last-ditch challenges stop Jermain Defoe from getting a shot away at goal.

Here you can see where Wahbi Khazri was when he whipped in the free-kick which Jermain Defoe stepped over... it looks like he had moved the ball quite a distance from where the foul took place.

Patrick van Aanholt (3) had won the free-kick.

More bad news for Manchester United? Sort of.

Jesse Lingard injured himself while tackling Jan Kirchhoff, but he has got the thumbs up to continue for now.

So, the perfect start for Sunderland. Time to see if they can get one of those elusive clean sheets that Sam Allardyce was on about before kick-off.

The home side have already had one scare at the other end when Lee Cattermole lost possession. The ball came through to Wayne Rooney inside the area but Patrick van Aanholt was in the right place to clear the danger.

Talk about a goal out of nothing. Sunderland had barely touched the ball when they won a free-kick out on the left, about 30 yards away from goal.

It looks like Wahbi Khazri has made a mess of his delivery when he swings the ball in, but Jermain Defoe's dummy as he attempts a flick fools the United defence and goalkeeper David de Gea, and the free-kick flies straight into the far corner of the net.

With an average of 58% per game, Manchester United have the highest possession rate in the Premier League this season... so it's no surprise to see them start this game with a prolonged spell of keep-ball, which ends when Matteo Darmian is caught offside.

Sunderland v Man Utd (12:45 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Sunderland showed great resolve in fighting back for a point at Anfield last week, and they'll have to dig deep again against a United side that seems to have got its mojo back.

"Since losing dismally against Southampton, Louis van Gaal's team have produced three infinitely more impressive displays that they must continue to replicate to have a chance of the top-four place they want and he needs.

"When the managers last met a year ago, Sam Allardyce irked his counterpart with the suggestion that United 'threw long balls in the box' to grab a draw late on at West Ham.

"Compared to what's upset Van Gaal since, it looks a storm in a teacup now."
