It could be argued that after so many years of lagging behind Real Madrid and Barcelona in financial terms, Diego Simeone would relish the opportunity to join a club such as Chelsea where signing world-class talent became a realistic option.

But Atletico are rapidly growing off the pitch, boosted by additional revenue following their recent part-acquisition by the massive Chinese property investment company Wanda Group. And they will take another big step forward next year by moving into a new 70,000-capacity stadium.

Games don't get much bigger than this. With Real Madrid trailing behind, it's left to Atletico to stop the juggernaut that isBarcelona from hurtling towards another title.

Both are locked on 48 points but will the wheels come off Luis Enrique's season? There is no sign of it yet but Diego Simeone's Atletico presents a huge test.

Should the capital visitors win at the Nou Camp for the first time in 10 years then they will fancy their chances of being crowned champions of Spain for the second time in three seasons.

    Can anyone stop Barcelona?

We're not even out of January, the halfway point of the season was just a few weeks ago. Usually, pancakes and Easter eggs have been scoffed before titles are handed out.

    Not in Spain.

Should Barcelona defeat Atletico Madrid today in La Liga's first-versus-second showdown, Lionel Messi & Co will go three points clear at the top with one game in hand.

And that, according to some observers, will make Barca uncatchable as they seek to become La Liga champions for the 24th time.
