Joel Ward hits a cross-shot across goal as Palace push on for a goal before the break. The half is rather petering out. Time for Pards to earn his dough.

Gareth Vaughan: Scott Dann must be one of the most unsung players in English football. A potential wildcard for the Euros for England?

You can rule nobody out at this stage. I'd suggest he's behind John Stones, Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Gary Cahill and Eric Dier at the moment though.

No faulting James Milner's commitment, just his timing as he slams into a challenge on Yohan Cabaye. A booking every day of the week. Even a Sunday. There was a touch of Paul Scholes about that, which is not something you say about James Milner's play very often.

It seems the entry on a monkey running a team has kicked you all off. Now we are getting lots of tweets about what animals would make good managers. You do make us laugh.

    A murmuration of managers?

Lovely backheel from Yannick Bolasie to set Wilfried Zaha away down the right, for all Liverpool's possesion it's Palace who are the exciting side to watch. A lack of end product so far for the Eagles though.

For all the technical ability Moreno shows going forward, you always get the feeling he'll make a silly, brash decision when defending and it will cost the team. Almost again there.

The midfield engine room rarely throws up such a contrast but Joe Ledley of Palace has touched the ball just six times in half an hour. Jordan Henderson has had the ball 36 times for Liverpool.

Damien Delaney heads over a free-kick from Yohan Cabaye as Palace continue to push on. Liverpool have been on the back foot for a few minutes but now they attack down the left, Divock Origi exchanging passes with Adam Lallana and then curling a shot onto the roof of the net.

Typical Liverpool this season. Superb performance followed by one that leaves you frustrated; but I suppose the same could be said of a lot of teams this season, except for Leicester of course!

Perhaps an example of where stats can deceive us. Liverpool on top in terms of possession and territory but their keeper has been worked, as has their crossbar.

Close! Yohan Cabaye shoots from 20 yards, curls it well but it's into the side-netting. Simon Mignolet was struggling there. Palace look a real threat every time they attack, Alan Pardew must be pleased with this start.

Luke's monkey text has got us thinking, what other animals could do a job in the dugout? I'm naturally swaying towards a dolphin. Although I suspect, as Karl Pilkington once said, that their intelligence is somewhat overplayed. Got the likeability factor though, I can't see fans calling for a dolphin to get the chop.

What on earth am I talking about?

Anyway, back in the real world the game has hit its first real lull.

Palace's keeper Alex McCarthy - who I seem to recall having a stormer against Liverpool for Reading a few years back - has a nervous moment as he juggles a corner but Divock Origi can't take advantage.

Origi very much ahead of Christian Benteke in the Anfield pecking order these days it seems.

If a monkey were put in charge of a zoo, and it went pear shaped, would you blame the monkey, or the person that put him in charge? McClaren is a poor manager, and should never have been hired. Poor decisions to hire managers are the ultimate issue.

    Luke, Portsmouth

That is my favourite opening to a text in some time Luke. At the end of the day though it's a results business. If attendances were down the monkey has to go.

Crystal Palace are not playing like a team in rank form, they are quick and direct and are causing Liverpool all manner of problems. Emmanuel Adebayor is in again down the left but his cross squirts away for a corner.

"But Simon Mignolet was brilliant there with the way he threw his body in front of Bolasie. Great save!"
