Michael O'Neill said his side are going through a run of bad luck with injuries and the team he put out against Cardiff "looked very young".
They lost 2-1 and missed the chance to go joint-top of the Championship.
Both topscorer Tyrese Campbell and Jacob Brown both went off injured.
But O'Neill said the injuries would give opportunities to others.
