It wasn't so long ago that Atletico were going through a mini-slump and although they've won their last two games against Eibar and Getafe with a certain Fernando Torres on the score sheet, they come up against a Villarreal side who have their own designs on reaching the Champions League. Third versus fourth means this one could be tasty.

After that earlier result, Atletico Madrid are now third in La Liga behind Real on goal difference but a win over Villarreal this evening will set them up nicely when the two teams contest the Madrid derby next Saturday.

Watching Real Madrid draw at Malaga earlier on Sunday means that Atletico can steal a three-point lead on their city rivals with a victory over Villarreal tonight.

And if they have thoughts on catching leader Barca, they can't afford any similar slip-ups.
