Speaking of celebrating wildly, it sounds like the Southampton boss Ronald Koeman gave his injured Achilles a good work-out after his team's winner. 

Saints boss Ronald Koeman: "It was the first time I have celebrated like that and run. I had my Achilles operation so I was not sure about it. I was so happy for the players it was a must win game, the same as last week we are still fighting for a European place, that is what we want. I wanted to celebrate with them I was so proud of my players."

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez: "Aleksandar is fine, he wanted to be on the pitch but he lost his conciousness a little bit. We have to play better and give him more good balls and crossed and he will score more. The positive thing was the reaction but we need to improve to get more confidence for our remaining games."

Quite an afternoon for Aleksandar Mitrovic, who scored, celebrated with a fan and then got knocked out before remonstrating with his manager that he wanted to stay on the pitch. It's a tale that will be talked about over a pint tonight.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez: "Maybe they thought they could win, they were very strong in the first half, In the second half we were much better, so a draw maybe is fair enough. The players fought 'til the end and the fans were behind us in a difficult situation. We have to do this from the first minute to the last to get more points. 

"I think we can stay up. We have to keep working, I believe they can play better and from what I have seen today in the second half, they can do well."

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez: "The positive thing for me is we have eight games to play and the reaction today from the players was positive. To win would have been perfect but when you are losing in the first half and keep the same gap, it's positive. The main thing was that the fans supported us today and we want that in every single game."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Sky Sports: "We have played 20 more games, how can I blame my players? They were not in the same shape in the second half and we had to finish the game.

"We have had wonderful moments this season and today it was Southampton's moments.

"I do not know about the top four, we are not closer than we were before. There are nine games left, that is 27 points, it is possible, I don't know."

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce on Sky Sports: "The foul throw [by DeAndre Yedlin before the equaliser] is in their half and they have to go a long way to score. It's disappointing when you're in the lead going into the last few minutes of the game and not being able to protect that lead. I don't want to get paranoid about it, we are what we are, so next time we need to score two goals."

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce on Sky Sports: "It's like Southampton all over again. For me, if we don't start getting these clean sheets it's going to be a massive problem. We are a team that has to score twice to win. Sadly we didn't get the second goal and we conceded late on again. We had the chances to put the game to bed, but missed them. 

"Second half, I don't know why we sat in and let Newcastle come at us. Maybe that was the size of the game, but in the end we haven't done that and it's two points dropped. We should have won this one. We need four wins from the last eight, so it's now must-win rather than draw."

I'm not sure who is more disappointed, Sam Allardyce or Jurgen Klopp? Big Sam is rubbing his hand over his face in frustration while Klopp looks like he's ready to punch a hole in the wall.

Sunderland goalscorer Jermain Defoe: "We should have got all three points, we controlled the game in the first half so we are disappointed. We were solid and it's one mistake and you have to concentrate until the last minute. These are the games you want to play in. Time is running out but I'm sure we will be fine." 

Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum: "We have come back in other games, but I'm still not happy because we wanted to win. The first half was a disappointment, because we conceded and didn't make the chances we had."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "The first half we played brilliant football, we have to close the game out, you have to accept the second-half they controlled the game.

"They scored three goals, we didn't, that is how football is."

If Sunderland fans feels sick, spare a thought for Liverpool's. Their team was 2-0 up and managed to lose 3-2 against Southampton. The Saints march onto seventh in the table, but what now for Liverpool after beating Manchester United in midweek?

"Newcastle didn't play brilliantly, but there was enough spirit to think they had a chance.

"They kept going for 90 minutes and they wore and wore Sunderland down without creating many chances.

"The one piece of quality was from Georginio Wijnaldum who had been anonymous for large parts of the game and well done to Aleksandar Mitrovic. He kept alive as he had no part in the game and was dominated by the defence, but he put himself in the right place and scored that goal."

So Newcastle have ended a run of six defeats to their Wearside rivals but they still sit a point behind Sunderland, with both sides still in the relegation zone. 

To be fair, I didn't really do Aleksandar Mitorvic's celebration justice as he vaulted an oncoming fan. Here it is in all its glory.
