"That wasn't a tap-in by Jermain Defoe. He is 15 yards out and passes into the net as if nobody was there.

"He is a natural goalscorer and has been dangerous all afternoon. He is really lively and scaring the daylights out of Chancel Mbemba.

"A couple of yellow cards in the Newcastle backline has added more fear to the players and the fans. If Defoe stays on the park he will get one or two more chances."

Raymond James Hunt: Defoe for England? Far better than Welbeck & a genuine threat in front of goal, back up for Kane/Vardy at Euro 2016?

Defoe certainly has not lost his touch. That's 15 goals for the season.

    Newcastle 0-1 Sunderland

Sunderland fans are celebrating in the top tier like they've won already. Steady now lads and lasses, there's a long way to go.

But as it stands, this lifts the Black Cats out of the relegation zone and four points clear of Newcastle. "Can we end the game now?"

"What a fantastic time to score. The goal came from a training ground corner kick which led to complete confusion in the Newcastle defence. Sunderland are shading this. Sam Allardyce managed to keep his cool. He is doing the usual 'keep your heads lads' sign."

Well it's not quite 3-0 down against AC Milan in Istanbul, but Rafael Benitez has previous when it comes to half-time responses. Although, if you believe Sam Allardyce, the Newcastle boss had "nowt" to do with Liverpool's amazing recovery in the 2005 Champions League final.

What can he muster this time?

All of a sudden Rafael Benitez looks concerned. What will he say at the break? There's the whistle. What a time to score.

    Newcastle 0-1 Sunderland

Sunderland are ahead and you have to say they've been slightly superior. They stand on the brink of seven successive wins over Newcastle. St James' Park is all gloom except for the top tier where the Black Cats fans rejoice.

Sunderland work a good set-piece to the edge of the area, Rob Elliot saves Fabio Borini's stinging shot, it's headed clear but only as far as Jermain Defoe, who volleys home for his 12th league goal of the season. It had to be him!

Jack Rodwell continues to be involved for Sunderland as he orchestrates the play on the edge of the Newcastle box, but when he engineers room for a shot, it is well wide.

A couple of forays from the back for either team. First Sunderland's Lamine Kone marches down the right win before Chancel Mbemba takes a more direct route but smacks his shot into about row R, I'd say.

This game has settled down a bit now with set-pieces looking increasingly likely to play a part in the opener. Former Reading boss Steve Clarke, once a Newcastle assistant manager, is in the crowd today.

Wahbi Khazri is taking this, standing about 30 yards out. He gets it up and down over the wall but it's wide of the left-hand post. Close.

Jack Rodwell and Jan Kirchhoff are combining well in the Sunderland midfield, and they end up releasing Fabio Borini, who wins another free kick deep in Newcastle territory in a central position. Daryl Janmaat goes into the book after pulling back Kirchhoff earlier in the attack.

Wahbi Khazri goes down like a squealing toy as Daryl Janmaat catches him from behind. Merits a free-kick but nothing else, says ref Martin Atkinson. The lofted set-piece is easily taken by Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot.

That was Newcastle's fifth shot of the half, compared to Sunderland's six. Both teams have one on target.

Jonjo Shelvey is over it, and he smacks it wide of the wall and inches past the post. I think that Vito Mannone might have had that covered. I stress the word, think
