An opening for Villa as Jordan Ayew cuts inside Chris Smalling on the edge of the box but he hesitates with his shot, allowing Morgan Schneiderlin to get back, dive in and block.

    Newcastle 1-0 Swansea

That Newcastle goal means that Rafa's men are now three points adrift of fourth-bottom Norwich with a game in hand. As it stands. Three very important words there at 15:45 BST on a Saturday.

    Jamaal Lascelles (41 mins)

Relief at St James'! The home side make the breakthrough. Centre-back Jamaal Lascelles bags his first goal in front of the home fans, glancing in Andros Townsend's left-wing corner from close range. What a time to break his St James' duck!

Now might be a good time for David de Gea to work on getting a bit of a tan. The sun is out at Old Trafford and the home keeper has had nothing to do.

Blow for Southampton. And it is literally a blow for skipper Jose Fonte. The Portuguese defender is clobbered round the head by an opponent - accidentally, we assume - and he's seeing stars. Early bath for Fonte, Japan centre-half Maya Yoshida trotting on in his place. Can Everton take advantage of that early defensive reshuffle?

    Newcastle 0-0 Swansea

It seems like the message is spread the ball wide at Newcastle. The home side are particularly keen to work the ball left and left-back Paul Dummett has had 32 touches. Is he going to hurt Swansea though? He hasn't yet, but that latest Newcastle chance (see 15:35 entry) was created down that side.

    Newcastle 0-0 Swansea

The sting has gone out of this game. Newcastle looking a little laboured...and then...

Suddenly the home side burst into life, Papiss Cisse pulling out to the left flank to cleverly flick a header into the path of the supporting Jack Colback. The Geordie midfielder ploughs into the left channel of the box, shooting low at Sans keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The angle beat Colback, but he had to shoot.

Sheffield United beat Chesterfield 3-0 in the early game in League One while the top two, Wigan and Burton, are still goalless in their games against Doncaster and Barnsley respectively.

Millwall are currently ahead against Coventry and are up to third as it stands while promotion-chasing Gillingham are 2-0 down at home to PortVale.

At the bottom, second bottom Colchester trail Peterborough 1-0.

Marcus Rashford just can't stop scoring. He is found in space in the box by Antonio Valencia's low cross and perfectly guides his shot past Brad Guzan. Seven goals now for the striker in 12 appearances. Villa will be going down as it stands.

Jose Fonte, you lucky boy. The Saints skipper hauls back Kevin Mirallas, a little tug on the right shoulder, as the pacy Everton forward almost scampers through. Referee Craig Pawson waves the complaining Belgian to his feet. The television replays show Fonte has got away with one. We've seen red cards dished out for less...

Manchester United have had nine corners in the opening 30 minutes. Nine! And they haven't managed to properly test Brad Guzan from any of them. The latest is headed up and easily gathered by the Villa keeper.

"Watson gets across James McClean and sends it goalwards. It was poor defending, McClean doesn’t see the run and doesn’t get across him.

"That was a typical end of the season, with nothing to play for goal."
