Liverpool look to reassert their dominance but James Milner's free-kick from the left is headed away and Connor Randall's resulting shot from way out is blocked.

    Jermaine Jenas
Ex-Spurs & England midfielder on Final Score

"Newcastle have come out a completely different side. If Cisse gets his touch right he gets a shot on goal.

"But it was definitely a penalty for Tiote's foul on Sturridge just moments before. Tiote just hung his leg out - it gives Sturridge every right to go over it. I think the referee's missed one there."

"That was a penalty. It was a lazy lunge from Tiote and he is a very lucky boy."

    Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

What a minute of play! At one end, Daniel Sturridge goes down under the poked out leg of Cheick Tiote, prompting huge calls for a penalty that are waved away, before Newcastle break to present firstly Cisse and then Townsend with chances to shoot. The latter fires his effort over the bar. There are more goals in this.

    Trevor Sinclair
Former England winger on Final Score

"As a winger it is one of them where you think, 'Don’t come for that, keeper.’ Mignolet can’t come for it, he got nowhere near it and it is a simple header for Cisse."

    Papiss Cisse

Hold on. This game isn't over yet! Newcstle have one back thanks to some lax Liverpool defending and a solid header from Papiss Cisse. Vernon Anita is allowed to cross from the right and Simon Mignolet charges out, misjudges it and allows the ball to beat him and reach Cisse, who heads into the empty net. Just what United needed - a lifeline.

Of course Sturridge should go to France. Most natural finisher in the Prem as proven by his goal today. Surely England fans want the best for their national team and anti-LFC sentiment shouldn't come into it?!

    Lee, Yeovil

51 goals in 88 games not bad for an "overrated" player... And currently on about 8 goals in 12 games this season I think. Best English striker when fit hands down.

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

It has been 20 years since Newcastle won at Anfield. They will have to do something pretty special in the next 45 minutes to avoid going down to their 20th defeat of the league campaign.

  10. KICK-OFFpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 23 April 2016

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

We are back under way and Newcastle have made a change. United top-scorer Georginio Wijnaldum, who scored in the reverse fixture this season - a 2-0 win for Newcastle, is on for Ayoze Perez.

Sturridge should not go to France, what commitment has he shown to England by making himself unavailable during qualifiers when he was actually fit. Overrated.

    Peter in Manchester

My main worry for Liverpool on Thursday night is not injuries nor drug bans but the fact Mignolet has probably forgotten how to make a save.

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

Liverpool have bossed possession and the game. However, they have only had two shots on target. Not that this matters when you score from both!

In contrast, Newcastle have mustered two efforts, both of which have missed the Liverpool goal by a distance.

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45+2 mins

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

Worryingly for Newcastle, this game appears to have been over from the moment Daniel Sturridge's shot hit the back of the net after 76 seconds.

The away side have offered very little and, thanks to Lallana's second, Liverpool are cruising to another win.

Newcastle are finishing the half quite well. Papiss Cisse's cross from the left is over everyone in the box but falls for Vernon Anita, charging in down the right. Unfortunately for the away side, he slices his angled shot badly wide. And Mignolet has still yet to make a save.

"I don't see any hope for Newcastle here. They won't get anything out of it without changing things drastically. Newcastle are no disgrace but Liverpool are just so confident, they're popping it around creating chance after chance. Newcastle are struggling to even hold on to the ball."

But wait... here is some purpose from the away side. A cross comes in from the right and his headed wide by the diving Papiss Cisse. It wouldn't have counted anyway as the flag was up for offside, but it is at least a small sign of attacking intent.

  19. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle

Newcastle are being out-worked, out-played, out-everything at the moment. It is not just that they are losing here, it is that they don't give the impression they have any belief they can dig themselves out of trouble, either in this game or the season.
