A penny for Pep Guardiola's thoughts after that first half.

On the one hand, he'll be pleased that neither side look like worrying his Bayern team on that display.

On the other, his new team may need a tweak or two in the summer...

Well, that was rather underwhelming. Good tempo and intensity to the match but no quality on display.

Sergio Aguero is clearly grimacing as he comes off.

Pepe finds himself on the right wing after a Real Madrid set-piece and he cuts it back to Karim Benzema - shoots well over the top.

David Silva gets applauded off and Kelechi Iheanacho is roared on. His pace and bursts forward mean Real have a different problem to deal with but the switch in personnel has meant a change to City’s attack - Kevin de Bruyne has moved over to the left and Iheanacho is playing through the middle, behind and occasionally in front of Sergio Aguero.

  6. Will City miss the Silva touch?published at 20:29 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Man City 0-0 Real Madrid

David Silva was in the thick of Manchester City's brighter attacking moments during his 40 minutes on the pitch. The Spain midfielder supplied two key passes (passes which lead to a shooting opportunity), notably the cross which Nicolas Otamendi couldn't head at the Madrid goal.

Joe Hart admitted at the weekend that the City squad didn't really know who Kelechi Iheanacho was when he joined them on their pre-season tour. If he sparkles in the next 50-odd minutes then the whole of Europe will know his name.

David Silva comes off then and it is Kelechi Iheanacho who comes on. A bold move from Manuel Pellegrini but one that the home crowd are very keen on, a huge roar greets the teenager.

"If Kelechi Iheanacho is coming on for David Silva, what does that say for Raheem Sterling?

"Silva hasn't had much of an influence on City during the second half of the season."

Well this is a blow. David Silva looks to have pulled a hamstring making that challenge. He has some treatment but, with plenty of Real's Spanish players taking much interest, it looks like game over.

"For Real Madrid, they need to get the ball into Karim Benzema or Gareth Bale. Luka Modric is having no influence on the game. It is so tight in the middle of the park.

"David Silva is not getting on the ball for Manchester City so he is coming inside. It is so compact all over the park."

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't watch many games from the bench and he looks a cross between frustrated and bored in the dugout. He knows Manchester well enough, he's wrapped in a big coat.

David Silva is in the book for a hack on Gareth Bale.

Gareth Bale goes into a central position, 35 yards out, and he takes aim. We've seen this before, a fizzing drive but Fernandinho does brilliantly to get across and block his shot with an outstretched boot. Superb play.

Would you take a 0-0 tonight City fans? No away goal conceded...

Are Madrid content to return home with a goalless draw? Appears so. Little attacking ambition from the visitors so far, with striker Karim Benzema (9) hardly having a kick in the City half. Madrid, as you can also see in our average position graphic below, are compact in their shape.

"I thought there would be goals tonight but 0-0 would not be such a bad result for Manchester City. It has been easy for both defences so far."

Sergio Aguero has only had nine touches of the ball so far, a passenger really. Casemiro then punts a routine pass wildly out of play to get his manager hopping mad in the technical area.

The quality is not great. From either side.

City put the free-kick in and it goes out the area, David Silva's cross is then headed over by Nicolas Otamendi.

That challenge from Sergio Ramos will be a talking point. He did just flick the top of the ball on his way through but that was rash in the extreme.

Both goalkeepers remain unworked but it's not a boring game. Far from it. High tempo, both sides are pressing hard and there are plenty of mistakes too. Sergio Ramos goes in now for another tough challenge.

He is not booked. Oh and he should have been! High, over the ball, he could have gone for that!
