Better from England now as Karen Carney plays a beautiful ball forward and Jill Scott's dummy puts Fara Williams through on goal. The move is let down by the finish, as she slices well wide but her blushes are spared by the offside flag.

Close! Alex Greenwood clips a cross in towards the near post and Eni Aluko evades her marker to sneak in. Surely 1-1? No, she can't make contact and the ball bounces across the face of goal. 

Alex Greenwood is booked for a foul on a Belgian player and the visitors have a free-kick in a decent crossing position on the right side of the pitch. The ball is whipped in but England head clear and then beak at pace through Eni Aluko. The crowd roar encouragement but Belgium regroup to repel the attack.

Steph Houghton is able to continue but someone who is not is the assistant lineswoman. Not quite sure what happened but an alternative is being warmed up to come on. Jonathan Pearce is getting a tad impatient in the commentary box as we wait. Ironic cheers as the replacement finally takes up position.

Very much an off day for England. 

Passes are going astray, wrong decisions are being made and in their desperation to equalise they are leaving themselves exposed at the back. Steph Houghton takes a whack as she stretches to cut out a dangerous cross into the box and is limping, but looks like she'll be good to continue.

A second change for England as Mark Sampson decides it is time to inject a bit of pace into the front line. Eni Aluko comes on, Toni Duggan goes off.

Fara Williams goes down inside the area. A little push inside the area? Referee says no and Belgium immediately counter, Janice Cayman with sight of goal but her fierce drive is held by Karen Bardsley.

England are dominating the possession but Belgium, you have to say, look very good when they do attack. Quick and accurate - something you can't say about England's play - and they almost get through on goal when Janice Cayman chases a defence-splitting pass but good keeping by Karen Bardsley as she races off her line to get to the ball first.

Mark Sampson decides it is time to make that first change and off goes Demi Stokes, who has been quiet, with Karen Carney on in her place. The Chelsea forward should add a bit more zip to England's play.

Good initiative by Fara Williams after England win a corner. The Arsenal midfielder spots Alex Greenwood lurking unmarked just outside the area and plays the corner to the edge of the box for her team-mate, who stabs an effort straight at Justien Odeurs.

The free-kick is floated in by Fara Williams for Steph Houghton but the Belgium defence heads clear.

Fara Williams is dragged down and England have a free-kick midway inside the Belgium half.

Mark Sampson decided not to bother turning to his subs just yet but Karen Carney is warming up. You sense he might be tempted to make a change around the hour mark if nothing improves and, you have to say, it is pretty much as you were from the first half. No fluidity from England.

After a restart - England seemingly too quick to get the game under way - the second half kicks off.

"It's disappointing that tonight will be highlighted as negatively as it will be for goalkeeping in the women's game, because the standard really is much improved. 

"Certainly at the World Cup last summer there were many examples of how far female goalkeepers have progressed, the standard has come on a lot. Tonight is a blip."

Not a great half for England so far, but there is some better news this evening for the men's team.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere, who has not played for club or country this season, returned to action in an under-21 game, managing 65 minutes before being replaced.

He has until 12 May to prove his fitness to England manager Roy Hodgson, who has chosen that date to name his squad for Euro 2016.
