    Diego Costa (14 mins)

Lamine Kone is fine but that did not really help Sunderland here.

Sunderland fail to clear their lines from the resulting corner and Gary Cahill is still upfield to slip the ball through to Diego Costa inside the area, and he provides an expertly precise finish from Cahill's deflected pass.

Trouble for Sunderland here, Lamine Kone does well to slide in and block a low Cesc Fabregas cross after the Spaniard darts in behind the home defence but has Kone injured himself?

A lot of huff and puff from Sunderland in the opening minutes but they do not have very much to show for it. Despite that, their fans remain very noisy.

"The team with more intensity has been Sunderland, they have been really up for it. Chelsea are not playing at a speed that will threaten the opposition.

"Kirchhoff has been the one to catch the eye so far."

Nicely worked by Chelsea, with Eden Hazard linking up well down the left with Cesar Azpilicueta before finding Willian in space near the edge of the box. He has time and space to compose himself, but ends up rushing his shot, which is scuffed and easily saved by Vito Mannone.

Former West Brom striker on Final Score

"Sunderland have started really strong, high pace. For that early free-kick, Cahill was the wrong side but I think Terry is covering him and it is the right decision just to book him.

"I think Sunderland are doing the right thing closing from front."

    Sunderland 0-0 Chelsea

Sunderland are pressing Chelsea hard whenever they are on the ball, but are having less luck when they do win it back. So far, the home side's attacks have all broken down before reaching the final third of the field.

    Sunderland 0-0 Chelsea

Chelsea have not threatened much so far,  but they do look dangerous on the counter. Diego Costa is alive to a ball over the top but it runs through to Black Cats keeper Vito Mannone.

"The referee has probably got that right. Chelsea have been so sluggish, trying to pass the ball around the back - Sunderland are not going to let that happen."

Wahbi Khazri takes the resulting free-kick, and hammers it straight into the Chelsea wall.

Sunderland have started well here. Chelsea give the ball away and Jermain Defoe is in... until Gary Cahill brings him down on the edge of the area. There were other Chelsea players around him, though, so just a booking from referee Mike Jones - Defoe wanted more.

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter

"Sunderland, as a club, have lived for so long on the edge. For the last four seasons they've been battling relegation.

"If Sunderland can survive this time then they have a manger who has to potential to establish the club. Perhaps, if he has the time and the backing, Sam Allardyce can push the Black Cats up towards the top 10.

"But first they have to win today's game..."

Speaking of Leicester, current Foxes boss - and title-winner - Claudio Ranieri was in charge of Chelsea the last time they lost at Stadium of Light in the league... in October 2000, when Kevin Phillips got the winner.

    Simon Brotherton
    Match of the Day commentator

"Sunderland slipped into the bottom three last weekend despite a late equaliser at Stoke, but they do have a game in hand over Newcastle who went above them.

"Their destiny is still in their own hands, though the margin for error is small and they haven't beaten Chelsea at home in the league for 16 years.

"Scoring goals continues to be a problem, despite the best efforts of Jermain Defoe.

"Sunderland haven't scored in their last three home games and that will likely need to change if they're to get anything against opponents who'll be in good spirits after Monday's comeback against Spurs."

If Sunderland do stay up, they have one man to thank more than most - Jermain Defoe. It would definitely help if he could reproduce his away form at home, though - only three of Defoe's 14 league goals this season have come at Stadium of Light and two of them were in one game, against Aston Villa.
