We could be on for for a cracking last half hour. Andy Carroll is on the floor on his backside but still manages to tee up Dimitri Payet running on to the ball. The Frenchman goes for side-footed curler rather than instep piledriver, and he whips it into the side-netting with David de Gea struggling...

That was only Manchester United's second effort on goal all night but it was brilliantly done by Juan Mata to tee it up.

"Manchester United have got themselves back in the game."

The shot count is 10-1 in West Ham's favour as Dimitri Payet hooks a shot well wide. Into the crowd, and the ball is pocketed. 

Michael Carrick's name is said over the speaker system and there is warm applause from the home fans. Clearly still fondly remembered from his time at the club.

Manchester United are out very early for the second half. Michael Carrick is indeed coming on, the midfielder replacing  Morgan Schneiderlin.

Stuart Mitchell: If Utd make the top 4 with performances like this, what does that say about the rest of the league??  

Daryl Wing: Despite #Rooney, external having a very poor team around him, surely his current form suggests a place, at best, on the bench in France?   

Michael Carrick is going through an intensive warm-up against his old side. The man to bring that balance?

Huge 15 minutes for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal. He needs to find the words to inject some life into this timid Manchester United side. They have got nowhere near West Ham United in the first half and have actually escaped lightly to be only one goal behind.

They are still in this game and still in with a chance of the win that would keep their Champions League destiny in their own hands - but they will have to perform so much better than in that dreadful first 45 minutes.
