Liverpool 2-1 Bordeaux - Group B matchday five

Sion 0-0 Liverpool - Group B matchday six

At the halfway stage of Group B, Liverpool were at risk of an embarrassing group-stage exit.

By the end they had qualified as group winners. Klopp continued to name full-strength teams and was rewarded with two wins, a draw and a seeding in the last-32 draw...

Liverpool 1-1 Sion - Group B matchday two

After that opening draw in France, Rodgers continued to stick to his rotation policy for the second group game against forgettable Swiss side Sion.

Adam Lallana gave the hosts a perfect start, but the visitors grabbed a point as Liverpool's stuttering European campaign continued.

The significance? Rodgers was booted out of his job a few days later

Bordeaux 1-1 Liverpool - Group B matchday one

Liverpool's journey began back in September when an inexperienced team crossed the Channel to face French side Bordeaux.

Brendan Rodgers was already feeling the heat after back-to-back Premier League defeats, but decided to take a far from vintage Reds to the land of fine wine.

Adam Lallana opened the scoring but Liverpool were denied their first win in four games when substitute Jussie scored to nab a late 1-1 draw.

Few would have predicted how the campaign would pan out...

Reaching the Europa League final is more gruelling than a hardcore 10-mile obstacle course. Liverpool have played 14 matches since starting in Bordeaux - a fitting location as their campaign has matured like a fine bottle of red. Let's remind ourselves how they have done it...

Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"This is a fantastic atmosphere even if you come here as neutral. But you wouldn't want to be doing it too often because you would want to be in the Champions League."

"If Liverpool win they end up with a trophy and Champions League football. Why would you not want to be in the Champions League as a player? It's utopia."

If Liverpool win, who should be on their Champions League shopping list?

The_Worrier90: If LFC win the EL they should buy Kouyate, Mustafi, Boufal, Mane, Wanyama. If they don't win Mane and Mustafi.

Josh Stevens: My Kloppmas list: A new goalkeeper (Karius), another CB along with Matip, Gotze - if he's below 25m. Apart from that no one.

Matt Price: On my Champions League list: Gotze, a goalkeeper than Mignolet (please Karius), two more defenders and a top striker!

  11. 'Final will shape Klopp's summer'published at 18:52

    Liverpool v Sevilla (19:45 BST)

There is more than a trophy on the line for Liverpool tonight as they face holders Sevilla for the Europa League.

"This is the game that will shape his summer strategy and Liverpool's immediate future," says BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty.

Phil adds: "The Europa League has almost been treated as an unwanted intrusion into the calendar, Uefa's second-class citizen behind the riches and glory of the Champions League.

"This all changed when a Champions League place was awarded to the winners - leaving Klopp and Liverpool with the opportunity to compensate for a pedestrian eighth-place finish in the Premier League with a seat at European football's top table."

"As much as Kevin Gameiro’s excellent goalscoring form, his biggest asset for the team is his insatiable work rate, which makes him the kind of player who must be a real pain in the backside for defenders.

"Although he is not particularly physically imposing, Gameiro is fast, strong, has great balance, shows intelligent movement and never stops running. He also has the happy goalscorer’s instinct of finding space inside a congested penalty area.

"Considering the form he has showed this season and the controversial omission of Karim Benzema, it’s somewhat surprising that Gameiro looks unlikely to make the French national squad for the European Championships."

"Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson dropped a heavy hint last night that he would not start after only making his comeback from a knee injury at West Brom at the weekend - and so it has proved. Manager Jurgen Klopp is taking no risks so Henderson starts on the bench, along with another who has recovered from injury in young striker Divock Origi."

Thousands of Reds supporters have descended on the small Swiss city, totally outnumbering their Spanish rivals. Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"I always think European football with a little bit of rain, which we have got tonight, is one of the best nights ever as a player. And when you actually win something, it takes a while to sink in but when it does there's a bit of a wow."

The two team coaches have arrived at a drenched St-Jakob Park. Liverpool's players have opted for a casual look - red hoodies and tracky bottoms - as they troop down the steps. James Milner goes for a short-sleeved polo shirt. He's from Yorkshire remember. The Sevilla lads adopt a dressier grey jumper and trouser combo. Smooth.
