    Barry Davies
BBC commentator at Wembley in 1996

"When I was doing England matches, there were two goals which weren't scored, which should have been.

"The first was Gary Lineker versus Argentina at the 1986 World Cup which would have made it 2-2 in the quarter-finals. It was one of those 'oh no' moments, not that I said it in the commentary, but I thought it to myself.

"It was the same with Gascoigne when the ball rolled across the box in extra-time. By then the game had become almost unreal. It was golden goal then, so it would have won it.

"It was such an exciting match and it had such a sad conclusion.

"I can honestly say that when Gareth walked up to take his penalty I did not fancy him at all. There was something wrong with his body language and you just get a feeling. It was horrible to lose like that, after coming all that way."

Terry Venables - England's manager in 1996 - told BBC Radio 5 live in 2014 that he still thinks about Paul Gascoigne's miss at night.

"Most nights when I’m in bed I have nightmares about it," he said. "It’s one of those things - you have a lifetime in football, it’s really fantastic but then on this little whisker of Gazza missing the ball for the goal that would have taken us to the final, you wake up and you think what could have been. For a long time it gets to you."

“Gascoigne thinks the diving goalkeeper is going to get a touch, he just stops and then he has to go again and he has lost that vital yard. What a story that would have been for Paul Gascoigne after Italia 90.”

Gascoigne!!! How has he not scored? If England don't manage to score in extra-time then this clip will be shown time and time again for years to come.

Sheringham sprays the ball out wide to Shearer, he volleys back across goal to the far post, where Gazza is waiting. But the sliding England midfielder can't stick his boot on the ball. If he was wearing a shoe just one size bigger...

  7. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 96 mins

    Germany 1-1 England

Germany have the ball in the net... But it is disallowed! Stefan Kuntz heads in from Moller's corner, but he is penalised for a push. Looks a little lightweight to me. Think England have got away with one...

Close! Andreas Moller lets fly from distance, David Seaman - who has not had loads to do - has to be alert to tip over his crossbar. German corner...

Davidos86: So close, Anderton. Probably should've scored!

Antony Noble: He's hit the post! Wow. So close from Anderton.

Darren Helliwell: Stating the obvious but Shearer would have put the Anderton chance away

Then Germany almost have a chance up the other end! Thomas Helmer whips in a low cross down the 'uncertainty of corridor' between David Seaman and his defence, but Stefan Kuntz cannot get a decisive touch.

    Back in 2016...

Darren Anderton, speaking to BBC Sport earlier today, said: "I don’t think about it now because it was an instinctive thing – it wasn’t like a one-on-one with the keeper and hitting it one way or the other.

"I just got a connection and the keeper got a little touch. I remember as I picked myself up off the ground seeing the ball bouncing back into the keeper’s hands."

Un.Believe. Able. England hit the post! David Platt sends Steve McMananman down the right, head down he pings the ball to the near post…Darren Anderton waiting unmarked….the diving Kopke can’t reach it, Anderton does…but the ball cannons off the right-hand post straight into Kopke’s hands.

The England bench cannot believe it.

Oldmangroom: It's always amazed me how El Tel didn't make any subs - not even a specialist penalty taker near the end of ET.

Ambrose Coghill: In hindsight, if McManaman and Anderton weren't gonna take penalties, we should've brought Fowler or Ferdinand on.

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

“It is interesting this business of the golden goal. Extra time of 30 minutes always tended to be two tired teams frightened to lose. So the golden goal hasn’t made any difference to that approach to extra time. But no-one can find a better solution to it.”
