So, Pep Guardiola begins with a late win, while David Moyes opens with an agonizing late defeat. Still early days for both men of course, with many twists and turns to come. Time for me to say farewell, for now, I will leave you with the match report. Enjoy that, and MOTD too...

  2. 'Sometimes, you are little lucky'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

    Man City 2-1 Sunderland

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "We definitely deserved the victory. The first games are always difficult. We spoke during this week about what we had to do like a team and we did it. Sometimes, you are little lucky. We should have been a bit more aggressive but these kind of things have to happen to know how to get better in the next game."

On the new signings: "John Stones, Nolito, they were all amazing. We are a team. We fight like a team and they did it. For the new manager, new players, it's important to believe in what we are doing."

On Joe Hart being dropped, and whether he will fight for his place: "Of course. They are professionals and are going to fight for their place."

  4. 'I'm just disappointed'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

    Man City 2-1 Sunderland

Sunderland manager David Moyes, speaking to BT Sport after losing his first game in charge of the Black Cats: "We tried to stifle the game and for long periods we were successful in doing that. I'm just disappointed. It was disappointing that we backed off Jesus Navas and allowed the ball to be played across the six-yard box (for their winner). From there it was always going to be difficult to avoid a goal or an own goal.

"I can't be critical of the players because they did a great job all-round really, but I am disappointed we didn’t get a point

"We are not ready yet. We're not going to be for a while, I’ve told the players that today. I want them to build on how they finished last season, but I want to do better than that. Which can't be done in two weeks.

"We are definitely looking short in several areas and will do everything we can to improve the team. But today we gave two young boys their debuts, at Man City. So if the young players do well enough we are happy to promote them too."

  5. 'We know how Pep wants to play'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 13 August 2016

    Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland

Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero, speaking to BT Sport: "This was a surprise for me [being selected to start], I've been training well in pre-season and to have this opportunity to play, I tried to enjoy it today.

"We started well with three points, It is better to improve and make a correction when we win. This is a new country, new club for the boss but the ideas and the way to play, we know how he wants to play. We are trying together with the whole squad for maybe only two weeks. But there are a lot of days to keep improving."

    Man City 2-1 Sunderland

Manchester City defender John Stones, speaking to BT Sport: "We've been working hard over the three or four days I've been here, I thought we brought a lot of good things to the pitch but there's a lot we can work on, with Tuesday coming. I'm pleased we got the three points in the end. We were patient with the ball - that's what the manager wants. Maybe sometimes we coul have played a bit quicker but that's football, we decided to keep it."

Todd: A last-minute own goal saves Pep after some pretty poor football, not so easy this Premier League lark is it?

Andy Knowles: Big win to start the season. Not easy & frailties to see but lot of positives to build up.

Rob, Sheffield: Get used to it Sunderland fans. Because of his overly-cautious approach at Everton, we got used to Moyes' teams throwing away points in the last five minutes.

Gareth Vaughan: What odds on Sam Allardyce selecting Defoe for his first England squad? Too many England teams have been picked on reputation rather than form with square pegs put in round holes. Defoe offers England something they continually miss - a clinical finish and a fox in the box.

If Pep Guardiola ever got tired of football management, there is a job - albeit somewhat less lucrative - for him as a New York traffic policeman.

In the frantic final stages, he appeared to be pointing at three players at once, one to go forward, one to stay back, one to pull wide.

There didn't seem to be much philosophy either in Fernandinho's agricultural hoof out of his own penalty area as Sunderland tried to mount an injury-time attack.

He had his hands on his head at one point as the blood pressure levels rose and the City fans started to panic.

He got his - deserved - three points but if this is the Pep way, it is more English than we thought.

Sunderland are not out of this yet and Adnan Janujaz threatens to get clear before being fouled by Aleksandar Kolarov - that's a booking. The Black Cats launch the ball into the area, and stay on the attack when it is cleared, but it just will not drop for them.

City should really have wrapped this up. They have men over in the box but Kelechi Iheanacho elects to shoot rather than feed Fabian Delph, and sees his effort deflected over the top.
