Paddy McNair own goal (87 mins)

The smile is back on Pep Guardiola's face...

Paddy McNair, the man who replaced Jermain Defoe, also has a goal - sadly for Sunderland it is at the wrong end.

Jesus Navas gets to the byline and delivers a fizzing cross that bounces up and in off McNair's head from point-blank range.

An unexpected setback that for Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City are used to winning their first Premier League game of the season.

They have done it for the last five seasons, including all three for Guardiola's predecessor Manuel Pellegrini.

    Can Guardiola find the answer.

    Man City 1-1 Sunderland

City are forcing a few corners - but that Bacary Sagna header apart, they are not looking much of a threat from them. The home crowd are trying to get their side going but time is running out.

    Man City 1-1 Sunderland

City are hardly knocking on the door here, with six minutes to go. Sunderland are defending well and in numbers, but Pep Guardiola's side are not showing very much zip when they bring the ball forward.

Bacary Sagna heads wide from a City corner, just before Sunderland make their third and final substitution - Another former Manchester United player Paddy McNair is on for their goalscorer Jermain Defoe.

    Man City 1-1 Sunderland

City's final change sees Kelechi Iheanacho on for Gael Clichy - presumably part of the instructions he received were "go on and score the winner".

    Man City 1-1 Sunderland

Vito Mannone collects a hopeful ball into the box and smashes it upfield for Jermain Defoe to chase. Willy Caballero very casually comes out to clear... almost too casually as it happens - Defoe almost latches on to his pass.

According to Opta, Jermain Defoe has now scored in 16 different Premier League seasons. And still nobody has worked out how to stop him.

Pep Guardiola looks concerned, understandably. His side have got about 15 minutes to find a winner. This was not in the script.

Vieira151: Jermain Defoe - lethal as always. Still unsure if we should have taken him to the Euros though.

Victor Munis: Defoe scores and Pep takes two big gulps of H20

David Simpson: It takes a sniff, and the wonderful scent of Defoe scoring is back in a big waft.

    Jermain Defoe (71 mins)

A goal out of nothing really, but Sunderland are level.

Fabio Borini does well before ex-City midfielder Jack Rodwell slips the ball through to Jermain Defoe inside the box, and he does not miss from there - well, not very often anyway. A clinical finish, but he had quite a lot of space.

Unlike Sunderland manager David Moyes, who is a constant presence in his technical area, Pep Guardiola takes brief breaks before resuming his vigil.

    He is fairly animated too.

After one period of quick passing, which had the Sunderland fans excited as their players chased after the ball without getting near it, he held his head in his hands when what should have been a through ball to David Silva was misplaced.

And when Sergio Aguero flashed a shot wide he spun round and clapped his hands in frustration as he rocked his head back in anguish.

Kevin de Bruyne is behind it, and decides to go for goal himself, whipping the ball towards the near post.... Vito Mannone gets across well, though, and keeps it out.

Raheem Sterling is currently causing Donald Love all sorts of problems down the City left. Love brings him down near the corner of the area and the home side have a free-kick in a decent position.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 64 mins

    Man City 1-0 Sunderland

Into the last half hour and Sunderland are making a double change - on-loan Manchester United forward Adnan Janujaz is booed  by the City fans as he comes on for his Sunderland debut, with Wahbi Khazri also being introduced. Duncan Watmore and Lyndon Gooch are the players making way.

City are also making another switch - David Silva is off, Fabian Delph is on.

Another sniff for Sergio Aguero and City, this time from a cross from the right. Kevin de Bruyne sends the ball in and Aguero is only denied by a well-time Lamine Kone challenge.

Jesus Navas is playing on the right, which means Raheem Sterling has switched to the left... with almost instant results.

Sterling goes past Donald Love with ease and sends in a dangerous cross that Sunderland cannot clear - David Silva cannot get a clean shot away, before Sergio Aguero fires narrowly wide.

A first change by City. Nolito's debut ends just before the hour mark, and he is replaced by another Spanish winger Jesus Navas.

City new-boy John Stones might be the best ball-playing defender in English football but he knows when to put his foot through the ball here, as Duncan Watmore threatens to break. On the touchline, Pep Guardiola was quick to voice his approval too.
