    Everton 1-1 Middlesbrough

We've not seen much of Middlesbrough in an attacking sense since Gareth Barry's equaliser for Everton.

Perhaps that's a good thing for Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who has had a few minutes to chill out after his controversial own goal was allowed to stand.

The Dutchman got booked for his protests after that, by the way.

    Everton 1-1 Middlesbrough

That's better from Ross Barkley, who turns Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala with a beautiful dummy.

Play is allowed to continue and Barkley's shot is blocked, after which Ayala sees a yellow card for his earlier foul.

Johnny Magrinho: Phenomenal finish by Barry but surely that's a horribly dangerous high foot from Williams on Valdes? Referee having a shocker.

Lewis Starks: Where are the Everton fans booing the ref for Ashley Williams kick on the keeper?! That one was worse...

Akinpelu Kayode: It should still be goalless. Shocking refereeing.

Referee Lee Mason has certainly got you talking with those decisions for the two goals.

Gareth Barry's equaliser, whether it should have been allowed or not, has got Everton going after a slow start.

Yannick Bolasie rises highest to head a cross towards goal, and it lands on the roof of the net.

There's a period of applause at Goodison Park in memory of Everton supporter Derek Acker, who sadly passed away after falling ill at a recent home game.

Could you write a better script? It's Gareth Barry's 600th game and he gets a goal.

The only thing Gareth Barry isn't doing in this game is blowing the whistle... he's here, there and everywhere. I don't know what he had for his pre-match meal but I want the same.

Andy White: As a Boro fan I have to admit that was VERY lucky!

Andy Rudd: If that is an own goal how can it possibly not be a foul?! The ball is in both of his hands?

Expecting this to be a topic that runs and runs, given BOTH sides have scored debatable goals. At least it's even, I suppose...

  9. goal

GOAL - Everton 1-1 Middlesbroughpublished at 23 mins

    Gareth Barry

Everton back level within three minutes, and it had to be Gareth Barry didn't it?

The midfielder marks his 600th Premier League appearance by firing into the net after Victor Valdes failed to gather a corner.

Questions about whether Valdes was fouled by Ashley Williams from the corner initially - the Wales captain's boot was fairly high as he went in to challenge the Boro goalkeeper.

GOAL - Everton 0-1 Middlesbroughpublished at 20 mins

    Maarten Stekelenburg own goal

Middlesbrough are ahead, with more than a whiff of controversy.

George Friend whips a cross in from the left, Alvaro Negredo gets above goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and nods it into the net from close range.

On second look, Negredo heads Stekelenburg's arms and not the ball. No wonder the Everton players are upset - Stekelenburg even more so, as it's going to go down as his own goal.

Middlesbrough will be more than happy to keep the big Everton striker out there for the rest of the game.

In the meantime, Ross Barkley tries his luck from 25 yards but Boro goalkeeper Victor Valdes palms it clear.

Gareth Barry has had a couple of decent interceptions but Everton just haven't got into Middlesbrough's half enough times.

It was a great second half by Everton on Monday at Sunderland but they haven't got going here. Everton are not pressing Middlesbrough enough and it's comfortable for them.

    Everton 0-0 Middlesbrough

Ross Barkley is doing his best to get on the ball and banish the memories of Monday's poor personal performance at Sunderland.

He's looked fairly assured in possession thus far, although all of his work seems to be in his own half of the pitch.

I'm sure Ronald Koeman and most Everton supporters would want to see him in a more advanced position.

Can Romelu Lukaku follow up Monday's hat-trick at Sunderland with more goals against Middlesbrough today?

The Everton and Belgium striker has scored against 20 different teams in the Premier League, but this is his first league appearance against Boro.

He needs the ball first, and I can only recall him touching it once in the first eight minutes.

    Decent chance for Middlesbrough.

They aren't afraid to get their full-backs forward at all. George Friend rampages down the left to win a free-kick, and Stewart Downing flicks a header from the resulting set-piece across the face of goal.

  17. KICK-OFFpublished at 17:30

    Everton 0-0 Middlesbrough

We've had 18 goals in four Premier League games so far today. Will Everton and Middlesbrough deliver some more?

Boro, in their familiar red shirts, get us under way on a glorious late summer's evening at Goodison Park.

Romelu Lukaku's 11-minute blast at Sunderland transformed Everton's start to the season from slightly underwhelming to extremely promising.

If Ronald Koeman's side win, the Dutchman can claim the best five-game start to a Premier League season by any Everton manager.

Last weekend's defeat by Crystal Palace has taken a bit of the gloss off Middlesbrough's encouraging start to life back in the Premier League.

A Gerard Deulofeu-inspired Everton knocked Boro out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage last season.

  19. Redemption for Ross?published at 17:25 British Summer Time 17 September 2016

    Everton v Middlesbrough (17:30 BST)

Monday wasn't Ross Barkley's day. The England midfielder was replaced at half-time against Sunderland, before Everton strolled to a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Manager Ronald Koeman said: "If you play a match, you analyse it, and of course there was a reason to change Ross at half-time - because he did not play well.

"He lost many balls and a player of that quality can't lose those kind of balls."

Barkley gets another chance today - Koeman has named an unchanged starting line-up.

    Everton v Middlesbrough (17:30 BST)

Results earlier today have taken Manchester City five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Everton will close that gap to two points and go second with a home victory.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are perched safely in mid-table at the moment. A win would make a good start for the promoted Teessiders into a great one.
