    Malta 0-1 England

Former England youth international Sam Magri has a chance for glory when England's defence backs off the Ebbsfleet defender on the edge of the box, but he drags his shot wide of goal.

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

A rare break forward from San Marino but Danilo Rinaldi's pass is poor and doesn't find a team-mate. Not many of his colleagues came forward with him.

That is no more than England deserve. They've had the chances but it's been frustrating. England should now draw confidence from that - particularly the nice play from Dele Alli - and should go on to build on that.

GOAL - Malta 0-1 Englandpublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    Harry Kane (53 mins)

August comes to an end... and Harry Kane scores!

It comes after great work by Dele Alli. He has the ball on the edge of the area and takes his time to work an opening, eventually slipping Tottenham team-mate Kane in on the left and, with the goal at his mercy, the striker makes no mistake.

Kane failed to score in August - a month that often troubles him - so it just had to be that when 1 September comes round he bags one!

  7. CLOSE!published at 20:55 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    Malta 0-0 England

A great chance... but not for England. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stumbles with the ball and Malta break well, working the ball up to the edge of the England box where Andre Schembri cracks a half-volley just wide.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:55 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

Marco Bernardi - who escaped punishment for a cruncher on Jonny Evans in the first half - is shown a yellow card for a foul.

I'll be honest, if I'm playing a match on Fifa and it's going like this - missing so many efforts - I know I'm about to concede and break my controller.

Northern Ireland fans should just be glad that this is real life and not my computer game.

England should just get the ball to Marcus Rashford. He's done really well so far, already beaten his man and he looks a real threat.

    Malta 0-0 England

Marcus Rashford takes up his position on the left side of England's attacking triumvirate behind Harry Kane.

The pattern of play is much like it was in the first half with England attacking but struggling to find a way through the Malta defence.

Another chance, another miss. Conor McLaughlin's cross is headed wide by Josh Magennis. That's their 13th shot off target.

  13. Postpublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

A decent move from Northern Ireland out on the left results in Steven Davis heading Chris Brunt's cross wide.

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    Malta 0-0 England

Right, forget about the first half. That's gone. Here's hoping the second half is significantly better.

If not, Celebrity MasterChef is on BBC One right now.

  15. Postpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

San Marino have a free-kick seconds into the second half and they pile men into the box. But then the ball bounces and hits the arm of one of their lads. Harsh free-kick awarded against him.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    Malta 0-0 England

Gareth Southgate has responded to that poor first 45 minutes with a half-time change, Marcus Rashford on for Raheem Sterling.

Malta are no mugs and we saw that in the first half. This is the biggest game of many of their players' careers. England's finishing has been sloppy bu they've been bright in creating opportunities.

England need space but there is none as Malta are dropping so deep. The longer that goes on the more confidence Malta get.

Fitness levels should show in the second half and England should go on to score a few goals.

These Malta players are a lot better than the likes of San Marino, Liechtenstein and Gibraltar. They don't concede many goals and they're well organised.

For England, the difference to the major nations is our players don't take their chances and aren't ruthless enough.

  18. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

"The goal will come." "The goal will come."

Republic of Ireland fans said that against Liechtenstein in 2007. They're still waiting for that goal to come.

It's not time to worry yet though. I'll give you a TIME TO PANIC heads-up at 60 minutes if we're still goalless in San Marino.

The second half is under way.

Norway lead Azerbaijan in Group C, Northern Ireland's group, thanks to Joshua King's penalty. Germany are still 1-0 up away to the Czech Republic.

Slovakia and Slovenia are drawing 0-0 in Group F, that of England and Scotland.

In Group E, Denmark are 2-0 up against Poland. The Irish-sounding Thomas Delaney gave them the lead before Cardiff legend Andreas Cornelius added a second. Romania and Armenia are goalless in that group.
