Zeb Bowyer: England making heavy work of brushing aside a minnow; shockingly uninspiring. No pace, power or precision. Simply abysmal.

Ali Hassan: OMG how much do they get paid to play like this?? No heart, no guts, no passion, but buckets and buckets of money!

    Lithuania 0-2 Scotland

No goals in either of these games, but we've had two in Lithuania, where Scotland lead 2-0. Stuart Armstrong and Andy Robertson got them. And it gets even better for Gordon Strachan's side - Slovakia and Slovenia are drawing 0-0.

England are keeping the ball in right half of the pitch but not doing a great deal with it. Two shots on target is all they have managed, a poor return from 78% possession.

Raheem Sterling has struggled to make the required impact. He had a golden chance to score in the first minute, didn't, and since then the ball has been bouncing off him like a kid kicking a beach ball on the beach.

Will Gareth Southgate be tempted to make changes for the second half?

JP Sergeant: £140m of wingers and full backs on the pitch - not one who can pass, cross or shoot. Awful.

Sownak Bose: That might have been the worst 45 minutes of my year so far.

Alex Winstanley: What a shambles. Get Vardy on, at least he actually wants to play for his country. Players don't care, it's clear.

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

The story of that first half?

Northern Ireland had 14 shots - one on target, one off the post. They've had 76% of the ball. Eight corners to San Marino's zero.

But on goals? It's all level.

Sorry to call you out on this Dan, but this was a terrible prediction.

Alexander Wheeldon: We might think San Marino are poor, but I think they’ve done mighty well to keep Northern Ireland Ireland at bay until now, I love their mettle.

    Malta 0-0 England

At least Emlyn Begley has had some post-rattling to talk about. No such joy in this game.

A promising start has fizzled out into something not too dissimilar to how football was once described on The Simpsons.

    Malta 0-0 England

    Gary Flintoff
BBC Radio 5 live in Malta

The temperature has dropped at the Ta' Qali National Stadium. It was over 30 degrees earlier, now it's only 27! England's players took on a lot of water during that injury break.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

Not sure anyone was expecting this. We are level at the break. San Marino are halfway to a fourth qualifying point in their history.

    Malta 0-0 England

England are trying to play long passes through the middle but the only problem is the player receiving it is doing so with their back to goal. Harry Kane drops back to the edge of the D to pick up a pass and by the time he has turned around the Malta defenders have crowded out his options and he runs down a blind alley.

Theo Bowyer: Clueless from England... no zip and no incisiveness. Same old story.

Johnny Di Girolamo: Watching England play football is awful. I've seen more intelligence in reality TV stars interviews. Absolutely shocking.

Michael Park: Two holding midfielders against Malta! Really! Livermore and Henderson is the most uninspiring duo in midfield. Just so dull.

  14. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

HOW HAS THIS NOT GONE IN?! A corner comes in, Conor Washington hits it off the post from about two yards out. The rebound lands to Jonny Evans - also about two yards out - and he sticks out a leg and turns it wide. Unbelievable. It's not going to be one of those nights, is it...?

    San Marino 0-0 Northern Ireland

San Marino keeper Aldo Simoncini flaps at a cross, Conor Washington tugs his jersey and concedes a free-kick.

Aldo then checks on twin brother Davide, his captain, who was hurt with all that flapping. He's OK though.

  17. Postpublished at 20:26 British Summer Time 1 September 2017

    Malta 0-0 England

Attack versus defence - to be expected - the only problem from an England perspective is that attack is running out of ideas in the face of a packed Malta defence.

No two ways about it, this has been dull.

THE angry dog: I could have been decorating tonight, but no, decided to watch England. Watching paint dry would be more exciting right now

Sean: We need to adapt to who we are playing... so we really need 4 defenders and 2 holding midfielders right now???

Zack Rynhold: Henderson yet to prove he's international class. Exciting attacking options, but little strength at core CM and CB positions.

How has he missed that? Conor Washington finds some space in the box and lashes the ball across the goal and wide from eight yards out. Still goalless.
