Try as I might, I couldn't find a picture of Slavisa Jokanovic smiling in our selection of images from Friday's game.

But I can assure you that he was delighted with his Fulham side as they started the Championship season with a 1-0 win over Newcastle.

"My players were very organised, we stuck to the plan, we suffered together during the game and we deserve the good result," Jokanovic told BBC Radio London after the victory at Craven Cottage.

"This is only the start but we have to be ready for what comes next."

  4. Newcastle don't score enough goals - Jenaspublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

Former Newcastle and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas was less than impressed with his former side, saying they lacked a cutting edge in front of goal during Friday's defeat at Fulham.

Jenas told BBC Radio 5 live: "One of the big reasons why Newcastle went down last season was because they didn't score enough goals. That was evident again.

"They've invested to bring in Dwight Gayle and they have Ayoze Perez, who is highly rated, but they didn't show anything. Whether that's down to supply or themselves not really offering enough - it didn't quite happen.

"Fulham were full of energy, Sone Aluko particularly. They were good value and they thoroughly deserved their win."

  5. A 'wake-up call' for Newcastlepublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 6 August 2016

    Friday: Fulham 1-0 Newcastle United

Defeat at Fulham was certainly not the result that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez was hoping for on the opening night of the Championship season.

"At the beginning we were nervous, in the second half we made the wrong decisions," he told BBC Newcastle.

"It's a wake-up call. We will have games more difficult than this one.

"If we play for something more important than the first game of the season, maybe the anxiety will be even higher. We need to make sure we can manage that and play better."

The EFL season is only one game old, and yet we've already seen proof that the Championship is anything but predictable.

Click here for the match report of Fulham's 1-0 victory over title favourites Newcastle United at Craven Cottage.

I think it's a good read. But then I would say that. I wrote it.

This is the trophy that the 24 Championship clubs are playing for this season.

Many expect Newcastle to be lifting it in May, but the title favourites got off to the worst possible start at Fulham last night. More on that in a moment...

The Premier League must wait for another week, as today the rebranded English Football League takes centre stage.

It's a big day for us at BBC Sport too, as we launch a brand new weekly live text service dedicated to the Championship, League One and League Two.

    Shall we begin?

If you're anything like me, you've probably had a big red circle around 6 August on your calendar for some time now.

Like me, you've probably missed meeting your friends for a quick drink before the match. You've missed that sweet aroma of gravy-based beverages and balti pies inside the ground. You've missed that annual feeling of hope and expectation that this might FINALLY be your club's year.

    Well, the waiting is over.

Football is back, and it feels tremendous.

The new domestic campaign began in west London last night, with slightly less pomp and circumstance than there was in Rio.

Which brings us to today - the first Saturday of the season.

What an amazing opening ceremony that was, and what a way to begin the 2016-17 English football season.
