    Malta v Scotland (10:45 BST)

Scotland must win their first two World Cup qualifiers if they are to stand any chance of ending their long wait for a major tournament, says Steven Thompson.

The Scots begin their 2018 campaign in Malta tonight before hosting Lithuania at Hampden Park on 8 October.

With away games against Slovakia and England to follow, a strong start is imperative, says ex-striker Thompson.

"Scotland are historically not great starters, but we need to win both these first two games," he told BBC Scotland.

"We need six points going into a double header against Slovakia - who showed at the Euros they are a very good side - and then England.

"There is a possibility we might get nothing from those two games, so we have to take maximum points from these first two games."

Rodge in Lincoln: This England team should be charged with theft!

Tattz in Bentley Heath: Same team as June, same players, same tactics, same results. The only thing different is Theo has a few new tattoos.

Steve: Not one player worthy of a 100 caps playing for England tonight. Harry Kane is just not an international centre forward.

    Malta v Scotland (19:45 BST)

Chris Martin starts up front for Scotland but there are a few other notable selections from Gordon Strachan.

Hearts right-back Callum Paterson is thrown in at the deep end. The 21-year-old has one cap, playing 45 minutes in May's 1-0 friendly loss to Italy.

Teenager Oliver Burke - Scotland's most expensive footballer ever - is also making his competitive debut and makes his first international start after two cameos from the bench in friendlies this year.

Midfield terrier Barry Bannan comes in out of the cold for his 22nd cap after making just one sub appearance against Gibraltar in the Euro 2016 campaign.

Tactically England were poor and their basics were poor. But they won it through perseverance alone.

But there's a lot of work for Sam Allardyce to do and would England have won the game had Martin Skrtel not got himself sent off?

Does that paper over the cracks? No. There's not enough paper.

    So what happened elsewhere?

Slovenia, who England visit on 11 October, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Lithuania. Poland also blow a 2-0 lead away to Kazakhstan and are forced to settle for a point after a second-half comeback by the hosts. Azerbaijan, who are in Northern Ireland's group, win 1-0 away to San Marino and Denmark beat Armenia 1-0.

You can't expect much change in one game, but there was something marvellously 'un-international' about those last few England attacks. That is not a criticism by the way.

Just chuck the ball in the box and hope for the best. And it eventually worked.

I'd rather England had a lucky manager than a good manager!

Sheer perseverance from England and a soft effort sneaks under the keeper and over the line.

In the end, persistence saw England home. Big Sam's side kept going right to the end, and it's three points.

Only the group winners qualify automatically. As Sam Allardyce suggested, a draw is not the end of the world. But I don't imagine it will be perceived as such.

I promise this is not a re-run of an England game from the Euros in the summer. This is now, and England are struggling to break down a 10-man Slovakia. How about that?

If England continue to play like this in this Group then we really will have a struggle to qualify.
