Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland boss, on Sky Sports: "We've reused the Austria training base which we used at the Euros - the players worked hard and it's a good environment. And now we're ready to play.

"Tonight will be a tough game and you want to get points as early as possible. This is as tough as it gets, apart from travelling to Germany. But tonight is a game we believe we can take something from.

"The team isn't a major shock in terms of selection - it's been picked from a very shallow pool of players but it's a team that can get a result."

Czech Republic v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

The Czech Republic failed to make it out of their group at the Euros this summer, and since then Petr Cech has retired and there's no Tomas Rosicky either.

In fact, there's not really a household name in their starting XI at all these days. A new era. New start.

Kyle Lafferty - NI's hero of the last qualifying campaign - continues his starting role up front despite a lack of club football for Norwich.

Lafferty has made just two Championship appearances off the bench this season. Though he did score in a 6-1 humping of Coventry in the League Cup.

Plenty more England reaction to come, but we are now switching gear towards the Northern Ireland v Czechs game.

It was a heady summer which saw Northern Ireland reach the knockout stages of Euro 2016. Can they go that extra mile and reach a World Cup for the first time since Mexico 86?

  10. 'We had to win'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 4 September 2016

    Slovakia 0-1 England

England manager Sam Allardyce, speaking to ITV: "It was pretty nerve-racking at the end because the 10 men scenario meant we must win. We got what we deserved in the end and won in the last minute. Perhaps their keeper shouldn't have stayed down so long. Theo Walcott's was definitely a goal. We have dominated the game and got a very important win."

    Chris Waddle

I don't think England are a bad side but we lack players in certain positions. We don't play floating players, whereas all the top international sides do.

A club side would acquire an Eden Hazard, but of course we can't do that. The players that excite fans at the top teams are not English, they are all foreign players, people like Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero.

  12. 'Rooney was brilliant'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 4 September 2016

    Slovakia 0-1 England

England manager Sam Allardyce on Wayne Rooney's position, speaking to ITV: "Today Wayne played wherever he wanted to. He was brilliant and controlled midfield. I can't stop Wayne playing there."

Duncan: Not proud of that performance. Scrappy late goal against a poor 10-man side. No chance against better teams of 11 players.

Jonny Wright: England fans need to get a grip. The home team had zero shots all game and we have a new manager. Winning 0-1 is absolutely fine.

Daniel Johnson: Funny how people were expecting instant results. Same team and the manager's barely had time with the players. Wins a win, move on.

Czech Republic v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

Northern Ireland make three changes from the side who lost 1-0 to Wales in the last 16 of Euro 2016.

Craig Cathcart is injured, with Aaron Hughes not in the squad and Corry Evans not starting tonight.

Conor McLaughlin, Shane Ferguson and Paddy McNair, now of Sunderland, all start.

  15. 'We're very easy to play against'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 4 September 2016

    Slovakia 0-1 England

    Chris Waddle
Former England winger on 6-0-6 on BBC Radio 5 live

It's tricky when an opposition park the bus, but the problem England have is creativity.

We have some players who flatter to deceive, and we play in front of teams too much with no width. That makes us very easy to play against.

  16. 'Excellent start'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 4 September 2016

    Slovakia 0-1 England

England captain Wayne Rooney, speaking to ITV: "We didn't panic, that was the main thing. We stuck to our plan and kept our shape. Adam scored the goal to get us off to an excellent start."

On playing deep midfield: "That's where Sam wanted me to play. We worked on it through the week. When the team was announced a lot of people thought I was going to play higher, but it suits me."

    Slovakia 0-1 England

    Chris Waddle

Before the game Big Sam did say he'd take a draw. But make no mistake, England struggled against a very ordinary side.

But Sam Allardyce has about 30 players to pick from and the Premier League is not producing quality English footballers.

Match winner Adam Lallana, speaking to ITV: "That goal has been a long time coming. I put pressure on myself to score goals. We kept plugging away. As a unit we played brilliantly and they didn't have any chances. Of course it's a great start for Sam and the team. He made it clear he wanted a clean sheet. I thought we were very disciplined."
