Former FA Chairman Greg Dyke: "I think the Football Association have taken the right decision. If you want to be England manager you have to be whiter than white. The FA did not have an option. This guys was being paid more than three million a year, why was he running around after £400,000? We did not have that sort of problem with Roy Hodgson, I think he was straight as a die.

"There were lots of corrupt practices at Fifa which they did nothing about. When the FA discovered they had to act quickly."

“It does not really surprise me what Sam Allardyce said. I am surprised however at how naïve Sam Allardyce was after so long in the job. 

"I don’t think fans will be annoyed that he is explaining how to get around rules, I think it is more that he was chasing money around the world when the focus should have been on the England job.”

On Southgate taking temporary charge of England: Gareth's management style is similar to what he was like as a player. He was a very straight and honest guy who spoke from his heart. He wasn't someone who just mouthed off, he was in control all of the time.

In the Championship, Huddersfield Town returned to the top of the table by beating Rotherham 2-1.

Derby County also won in their first game since suspending manager Nigel Pearson, beating Cardiff 2-0.

Brentford thumped Reading 4-1 to move up to fourth while Niklas Bendtner scored his first goal in English football since 27 September 2014 as Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with Fulham.

"He should have been aware that he might have been a target for sting operation. I can't get my head around it and Sam had to go. Why did he have to touch any of that business when he is so well paid?"
