In the final match of the day, Asdton Villa midfielder Aaron Tshibola earned his side a point at home to Newcastle.

Chris Hughton felt Glenn Murray produced his best performance of the season after the striker's two goals gave Brighton a comfortable 2-0 home win over Barnsley.  

"I think it was his best all-round performance in terms of his goals, his runs and his overall play. He won't do that game in, game out, but it was nice to see and I really enjoyed his performance." 

"At 1-0 Barnsley still had a chance, but we had good control of the game and the only disappointment was that we could have made the score-line more convincing."

Barnsley head coach Paul Heckingbottom called on his side to get back to discovering their best form after going down to a second successive defeat. 

"We knew that we would need to be at our very best but we are disappointed with our performance and it was flat.

"We were poor with the ball in the first half and needed more energy to pass but we didn't play with any intent."

Derby manager Nigel Pearson took the blame after seeing his side suffer a fourth successive home loss in league and cup. 

"That performance today doesn't really buy us any time for people to keep in a positive frame of mind.

"There was a level of anxiety in the stadium today which is something we've magnified ourselves through not performing in the way we should do.

"I will shoulder the blame. But the bottom line is we are where we are because of how we've performed so far.

Blackburn manager Owen Coyle backed under-pressure Derby counterpart Pearson.

"Nigel Pearson is an outstanding manager, that's not for debate, that's a given. I still believe Derby will be at the business end when the season finishes after 46 games because of the quality they have." 

"What we need to have is what we've seen today, a very tight-knit group that is prepared to run until they drop for each other, which they did.'

Garry Monk praised his Leeds side after they made it four wins in a row against Ipswich.

"I am very happy for the group. Everyone knows what they have to do and what is expected. 

"We are taking steps forward for sure. Improvements are there and when you look at that first game, it is pleasing. 

"We are not there yet, there is a lot more work to do, but if we can keep growing in confidence, they are going to get stronger and be very competitive."

Frustrated Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy felt former Tractor Boys loanee Wood was the difference between the two teams. 

"Leeds deserved to win. They are a good side, they have got good players. 

"I thought Chris Wood was outstanding, the focal point and the big difference in the team."

QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was encouraged by his team's performance, particularly the contribution of Polish winger Pawel Wszolek.

"He did very well. He is getting used to the English game and we think he's going to improve and get better.

"Our display was very good. We had a setback when they scored but it didn't affect us and that was really pleasing to see. In the second half there was only one team in it and we did very well."

Birmingham head coach Gary Rowett bemoaned the defensive lapse which meant his side had to settle for a draw.

"Shots [Ryan Shotton] lost his man. He apologised to the other lads at half-time. He just switched off for a second and didn't get tight.

"I felt we were fairly comfortable, and we scored, but it was very disappointing that we then allowed them to get into an area to get a corner and then score." 

Reading manager Jaap Stam saw his side extend their unbeaten run to eight matches with a 1-0 win over 10-man Huddersfield.

"Eight games unbeaten and in fourth place, no, I did not expect this at the start of the season. 

"It was a hard, very tough game. We knew it was going to be like that from the start.

"Before the red card, we should have moved the ball a lot quicker. We didn't do that very well. And it was always going to be difficult against 10 men."

Huddersfield head coach David Wagner criticised Dutch winger Rajiv van La Parra for his first-half dismissal as his side slipped to second place in the Championship table.

"Rajiv knows that this was a mistake. Mistakes happen in football and this was a big one. Rajiv has to react in a different way in this moment." 

"I was disappointed about the result but proud of the performance. We were the better team in the second half. 

"Even with one man less, we were still able to try for the equaliser or even win the game. We accept this and go forward."

Norwich boss Alex Neil was pleased with the result rather than the performance after Norwich beat 10-man Burton to move top of the Championship for the first time this season.

"We are obviously delighted to have taken the points but Burton played well and made us work very hard for the win. 

"I am satisfied with the result because that is the main thing in any game, to win it. 

"As for the performance, well I thought there were a number of good individual displays but did we play well as a collective unit? I think we could probably have been better."

Burton manager Nigel Clough felt a number of decisions didn't go his side's way.

"It was just one of those days when things didn't go our way. But we were playing against a side who were in the Premier League five months ago, who could afford to change their whole side after winning at Everton in the cup in midweek. 

"So to have pushed them so close, and created so many chances, is a good thing, I suppose. In the end we were punished for conceding two really poor goals."

Well, you couldn't ask for a much more exciting ending than that to the day.

Ex-Villa forward Gary Thompson on BBC WM: "On the balance of play Villa probably didn't deserve the draw because Newcastle dominated, but in the last 15 minutes they did ever so well.

"They played in a way that got the fans behind them and they asked questions of a team that are near the top of the table and all of a sudden Newcastle didn't look so good."

Aston Villa will feel disappointed not to have won this game after a much-improved second-half showing.

In truth, a draw is probably a fair result after Newcastle dominated the first 45 minutes, before Villa controlled the second period.

It's six games without a win now for the hosts, but there are plenty of positives to take from the match.

The visitors will probably be pretty happy too - that point leaves them fifth in the table, just four points behind leaders Norwich.

Aston Villa are rampant; Newcastle are clinging on.

Will there be one more twist in this tale?

Jordan Ayew is everywhere.

He robs Jonjo Shelvey of the ball just outside Newcastle's box and slides the ball into the area in the direction of Jonathan Kodjia, who is inches away from grabbing the winner. 

BBC Newcastle's NUFC summariser John Anderson: "That's what happen when you don't kill teams off. Newcastle have had their chances but Villa have changed things around and been the better side in the last half an hour."

Tommy Elphick misses a big chance to make amends for his first-half own goal, finding himself unmarked from a corner about eight yards from the Newcastle goal.

The former Bournemouth defender gets it all wrong however, nodding the ball beyond Matz Sels' right-hand post.

Striker Rushian Hepburn-Murphy comes on for midfielder Ashley Westwood as Aston Villa's third and final substitute.

Newcastle look content to just sit back and try to see the last few minutes out.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been brought on in attack by Rafael Benitez, but he's not getting much support from his teammates.

There's just a little over five minutes left of regular time left for Aston Villa to get an equalising goal.

Aaron Tshibola goes down inside the box and there is a slight touch from a Newcastle defender.

It was only very slight though, the midfielder going down far too easily and getting shown a booking as a result.

He was well-placed for a shot on goal had he stayed on his feet.

Rudy Gestede hasn't had many touches, but he's given Aston Villa a different dimension in attack with his aerial presence.

Ashley Westwood causes more jitters in the Newcastle box when he sends another cross in Gestede's direction, but goalkeeper Matz Sels eventually gathers it in.
