    Aston Villa 0-1 Newcastle

Ex-Villa forward Gary Thompson on BBC WM: "It's a good ball in and Tommy Elphick doesn't know where Dwight Gayle is so he has to go for it, but he's gone for it with his wrong foot and he's put it past the keeper.

"Villa have got a game on their hands now because they have sat back."

Isaac Hayden sets DeAndre Yedlin free down Newcastle's right, and the full-back whips in a delicious low cross.

Tommy Elphick attempts to steer the ball clear under pressure from Dwight Gayle, but only succeeds in diverting into his own net.

    Advantage Newcastle.

    Quote Message

Elphick was all over the place for the goal. Isaac Hayden does great because he's just wrapped a boot around it and played it inside for Yedlin to get on the ball.

  3. Shelvey goes into the bookpublished at 27 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey can count himself fortunate to still be on the pitch.

The Newcastle midfielder almost undoes all his side's good work of the last 15 minutes when he leaps into a challenge on Ashley Westwood.

He's only shown a yellow card by the referee. It was borderline.

  4. Diame fluffs his linespublished at 26 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle drive forward once more, and this time Pierluigi Gollini is called into action to block Matt Ritchie's shot.

The ball comes back to a Newcastle player who picks out Mo Diame, but the former Hull forward scoops over the bar as he swivels on the penalty spot.

  5. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

A chance, of sorts, for Dwight Gayle.

Newcastle get a cross into the box, but Gayle - from what looked like an offside position - sends a spectacular volleyed attempt way, way over the bar under pressure.

It was a very tough opportunity to be fair to the striker.

  6. Postpublished at 21 mins

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Aston Villa are struggling to get hold of the ball, though Albert Admoah's pace is still threatening to cause Newcastle a few problems down their left.

Jonathan Kodjia looks isolated up front so far - he's struggling to hold the ball up when it does come his way as well.

    Quote Message

Villa's formation looks negative to me. They look to be set up not to lose this game.

Your team's best left-wingers, past and present...

John: Bertie Auld in his BCFC days, particularly in Europe. Mad as a box of frogs, but a great bloke and player.

James: Stan Lazaridis. Superb winger who scored goals. If only David Cotterill could for Birmingham City.

Matthew: It has to be Tony Morley for Villa. Goal of the season winner 80/81 and the assist for the winner in the European Cup Final.

Aston Villa could do with a few of Tony Morley's goals this season....

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle are definitely growing into the contest now, with Matt Ritchie seeing a long-range effort deflected wide.

Once again though, Aston Villa clear their lines from the resulting corner.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

A first real sight of goal for Newcastle, Jonjo Shelvey striking a free-kick straight at Villa keeper Pierluigi Gollini.

He'd have been disappointed to have been beaten from that kind of distance.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Leandro Bacuna wins the ball in the centre circle for Aston Villa and drives towards goal, but Yoan Gouffran sprints back to block his shot.

The hosts have shaded this first 10 minutes for me.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle win themselves a corner through Jonjo Shelvey's deflected shot, but Villa defend it well and clear their lines.

Albert Adomah has looked lively for the hosts on his first start for the club - it was his pass which set Kodjia on his way a few minutes earlier.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

It's a pretty even start, with both sides getting plenty of touches of the ball in the early stages.

Jonathan Kodjia has the first chance of the game, but he he hesitates too long before pulling the trigger after being set free down the right and Newcastle get the block in inside the box.

Newcastle line up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with DeAndre Yedlin making his first league start for the club at right-back, and Ciaran Clark starting against his former club at the heart of the Magpies defence.

Aston Villa make only one change from the side which drew 0-0 at Ipswich in their previous game, Albert Adomah replacing Jack Grealish, who is not even on the bench for the hosts.

Grealish is the subject of an investigation at the club after reports he was involved in an all-night party following that match with the Tractor Boys.

Aston Villa: Gollini, Chester, Elphick, Baker, Bacuna, Amavi, Jedinak, Westwood, Adomah, Ayew, Kodjia.

Subs: Bunn, Hutton, Richards, Tshibola, Cissokho, Hepburn-Murphy, Gestede.

Newcastle: Sels, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Hayden, Gouffran, Diame, Gayle.

Subs: Darlow, Hanley, Lazaar, Tiote, Atsu, Perezm Mitrovic.

Two big clubs, both relegated from the Premier League last season, but having rather different starts to life in the Championship.

Despite losing to Wolves in front of their home fans one week ago, Rafael Benitez's Newcastle have more or less lived up to their billing as one of the favourites for promotion, picking up 15 points from their first eight games.

Roberto di Matteo's Aston Villa have not found the early going quite so easy, finding themselves 19th in the table and on a six-match winless run, despite splashing out on big-money transfers including Ross McCormack and Jonathan Kodjia in the summer transfer window.
