Fifty years ago... Celtic played their first ever European Cup tie; a 2-0 home win over FC Zurich.

Joe McBride and Tommy Gemmill got the goals. Jock Stein's famous side only went on to win the bloody thing at the first attempt!

City's first taste of Europe's premier event came in 1968-69 and ended in the first round. They had to wait until 2010 for another go...

Like the visitors, Celtic sit at the top of their league and have 10 wins this season.

However, there have been a few hiccups along the way for Brendan Rodgers, not least a 1-0 debut defeat for the manager against the semi-pros of Lincoln Red Imps in Gibraltar and a 7-0 thrashing in Barcelona on match-day one of this group campaign.

  3. Pep eyes winning recordpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Celtic v Manchester City (19:45)

This is also a first for City boss Pep Guardiola. Despite Celtic always seeming to draw Barcelona in the Champions League, none of those meetings came during his tenure at the Nou Camp.

Guardiola, who won the European Cup once as a player and has two Champions League titles to his name as a manager, has got off to a pretty decent start to life in England with 10 wins on the bounce.

Another victory tonight and he will match Manuel Pellegrini's 11-win sequence for City, established over the end of 2014-15 and the start of 2015-16.

Celtic are set up to create chances. Rodgers is saying they are going to be more offensive-minded than against Barcelona - that is borne out in his team.

De Bruyne has been fantastic this season - Guardiola says he's one of the top players in the world at the moment. Who do they have in his place? David Silva. Oh dear, one of my favourite Premier League players of all time.

Manchester City's team, player for player, is better than Celtic's, but it doesn't always work that way.

I've been coming to Celtic for European nights since 1969. The noise might be louder now than it was then. These fans will be up for it and will try to give Celtic every help they can - they will need it.

  8. Team changespublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Celtic v Manchester City (19:45)

As well as bringing in goalkeeper Craig Gordon, Celtic restore Kolo Toure to the heart of defence. Leigh Griffiths stays on the bench after making a scoring return from injury last weekend.

For City, there are three changes from Saturday's win at Swansea, Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Nolito are in, with Aleksandar Kolarov switching to a central defensive role and John Stones dropping to the bench.

  10. New territory for Citypublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Celtic v Manchester City (19:45)

This is the first time the sides have met in a competitive fixture.

While Celtic have gone head-to-head with many of the giants of English football in Europe before, City have never previously met an opponent from north of the border.

A quick trawl of the search engines reveals that City's only experience of a tie in Scotland came 45 years ago in the long-defunct Texaco / Anglo-Scottish Cup when they lost 2-0 to Airdrie following a 2-2 draw at Maine Road.

Never mind, Guardiola, Rodgers, Aguero, Silva, Dembele or Griffiths; tonight we open with a picture of Drew Busby...

  11. Changes in store?published at 18:32 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

    Celtic v Manchester City (19:45)

We know goalkeeper Craig Gordon will take over from the injured Dorus de Vries but what else do Celtic have in mind? Will fit-again Leigh Griffiths be paired with Moussa Dembele in attack or will manager Brendan Rodgers opt for a more cautious approach?

City are without injured trio Kevin de Bruyne, Fabian Delph and Vincent Kompany but aren't exactly short of quality options.

The teams will be confirmed shortly...

It's Glasgow v Manchester; two very similar cities with rich industrial pasts that have blossomed into important cultural hubs, while retaining enough grit to keep the hipsters on their toes.

I've got Manchester ahead on great bands, with Glasgow edging it for comedians and you can't nip out for a newspaper and pint of milk without bumping into a Turner Prize nominee in Scotland's biggest city.

And they are both football mad...

Glasgow has long dominated the Scottish football scene, while the champions of England have come from Manchester in seven of the last 10 seasons.
