He may have scored the goal which condemned Bournemouth to defeat, but Sunderland captain Jermain Defoe still received a warm round of applause from the home supporters in the main stand when he was substituted as the visitors ran the clock down in stoppage time. His teenage heroics for the Cherries in 2000-01 are not forgotten so easily.

They've done it! In the most remarkable of circumstances.

Looked shocking in the first half, they were then a man down, but they've won their first league game of the season.

    Well done Sunderland.

Pinball again in the Sunderland area, this time Bournemouth sub Lys Mousset's touch towards goal crawls past Jordan Pickford's right-hand upright.

A year ago on Guy Fawkes weekend, Bournemouth hosted a north-east side struggling against relegation and looking for their first away win of the Premier League season. The Cherries dominated possession, but were let down by a poor finishing and a man-of-the-match performance by the visiting goalkeeper.

Sound familiar? Newcastle were the victors that day, 1-0.

    Brilliant save by Jordan Pickford!

Joshua King hits a fierce effort which comes off the bottom of Papy Djilobodji en route, but the 22-year-old is equal to the change in trajectory and leaps high to make the save.

A great one for the cameras.

Bournemouth are piling on the pressure here, but Duncan Watmore, who should be renamed Duncan "Warhorse", comes back to the Sunderland area to ease the pressure on the defence.

Cherries sub Benik Afobe snatches at another shot from 18 yards. Really Benik!

That Jermain Defoe penalty ends a run of saves from Artur Boruc, who had kept out the previous three spot-kicks he'd faced in 2016 - from Leicester's Riyad Mahrez (2 January), West Brom's Craig Gardner (7 May) and Crystal Palace's Yohan Cabaye (27 August).

Bournemouth should have drawn level but sub Benik Afobe shoots wide from 10 yards.

Can the Black Cats hold on? They've got 13 minutes plus extra.

    Yup, you read right.

Adam Smith brings down Victor Anichebe in the area after the striker was played in by Duncan Watmore.

It looked a bit soft but ref Mike Dean didn't think so. And it's his thoughts that count.

Sunderland defensive midfielder Paddy McNair, still seemingly feeling the effects of an earlier shoulder injury, is replaced by Jason Denayer.

The ball is pinging around the Sunderland box.

Jack Wilshere plays a lovely one-two with Junior Stanislas but Lamine Kone just about gets a toe in to divert the ball away just as Wilshere was about to shoot from six yards.

Victor Anichebe goes in the book for a foul on Dan Gosling.

Just when Sunderland had Bournemouth on the rocks, suddenly the pendulum swings back towards the home side.

Jack Wilshere is yet to find the net in red and black - he hit the bar against Everton - but Jordan Pickford keeps him out, and now the visitors face more than half-an-hour with 10 men after Steven Pienaar's second yellow card. Initially, it looks like the visitors have switched to playing 4-5-0 at times with even Jermain Defoe pressed into service to hold back the red tide.

As that fella sang, "it's getting hot in here" Obviously we hope they keep on all their clothes.

Just before the sending off Artur Boruc saved Didier Ndong's 20 yard shot.

Then Jordan Pickford saved low to deny Jack Wilshere.

And just now Junior Stanislas has sidefooted his 10 yard shot against the far post.

He should have made it 2-1.

  16. RED CARD FOR SUNDERLANDpublished at 58 mins

    Bournemouth 1-1 Sunderland

Black Cats midfielder Steven Pienaar sees red for a foul on Junior Stanislas. It was a naughty challenge by the ex-Everton man whose studs met the shin of the Cherries man.

Ref Mike Dean was about a yard away. Really it could have been a straight red rather than a second yellow.

Sunderland have a corner. Yup, they've started this second half well.

But the Cherries clear. The home side keep giving away silly fouls though. Black Cats have possession again.

David Moyes may be serving a touchline ban, but has remained in constant contact with the Sunderland bench throughout the game. One lieutenant, sat next to Moyes, is wearing an earpiece to keep him in touch with a coach on the touchline. All of them cover their mouths when they talk, to the frustration of any lip-readers in the stadium.

    Paddy McMare!

It looked an innocuous challenge by Dan Gosling but the former Manchester United player Paddy McNair is clutching his shoulder in agony.

    Has it gone?

Well, he's still on the pitch but doing a 'windmill' with the affected arm.

    As you were.

Jordon Ibe, the Cherries' record signing, has been substituted in each of his 10 Premier League appearances since joining from Liverpool. Make that 11 - it's another early shower for the 20-year-old as they look to the strength of Benik Afobe to assume the central striking role, with Joshua King moving wide.
