Sunderland are playing 4-4-2, but with Paddy McNair, nominally the left-sided midfielder, often tucking in to give the Black Cats an extra body in the centre.

McNair, usually a defender back in his Manchester United days, does not fit the role of a natural left-winger (although he drew the foul for which Harry Arter was booked), and his tendency to drift infield has allowed Bournemouth right-back Adam Smith plenty of space to get forward - and Smith delivered with that cross for Dan Gosling's goal.

    Dan Gosling

This looked like a home win banker.

Adam Smith bursts down the left and fizzes in a cross that is touched in via his thigh/stomach by former Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling.

That's his third of the season.

Moments earlier Jordan Pickford had tipped over a fierce Harry Arter 20-yarder.

    Too easy.

The ball is played over the top for Jermain Defoe, running into the area, but Simon Francis gives him a gentle nudge and nicks the ball away from him.

If it's that simple then the Cherries defence will have comfortable afternoon.

    Bournemouth 0-0 Sunderland

Half a chance for the visitors - OK, a quarter of a chance.

Duncan Watmore who, we all know, likes to zoom forward - often with little end product - charges up the field again but his shot from 20 yards is easily blocked.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 4 mins

    Bournemouth 0-0 Sunderland

Jordon Ibe, who has yet to score but has looked bright during his short Cherries career, surges down the left but his attempt to cross is blocked.

Bournemouth then win the first corner of the day but it comes to nothing.

Harry Arter, who likes a tackle, goes into the book for a foul on Paddy McNair. It was very late.

Guy Fawkes Night and still no win. Sunderland's bonfire of vanities will surely bring relegation. For years the club's direction has been hopelessly muddled. They should take a leaf from Bournemouth's book.

No side has ever stayed up after earning just two Premier League points by this stage.

Bournemouth's first ever top-flight home win came against Sunderland. This should be another.

Their settled side promises goals. The visitors could be badly beaten if they press as feebly as they did against Arsenal.

It's not often that the away team's star striker is guaranteed a warm reception from the home fans - but the memory of Jermain Defoe's goalscoring exploits remains a fond one among Bournemouth supporters.

The diminutive striker was a complete unknown when, just after his 18th birthday, he arrived on loan here from West Ham in 2000 - and hit the national headlines when he scored in the first 10 games of his professional career. Staying for the rest of the season, he hit the net 18 times in 29 league appearances as he took the Cherries to the brink of the Division Two play-offs.

Defoe's landlord for that season was defender Jason Tindall, now Bournemouth's assistant manager, and he won't be the only familiar face for the striker, now 34, who skippers Sunderland today - no fewer than five of that 2000-01 side are on the backroom staff here.

The big news from Bournemouth is that striker Callum Wilson misses out after picking up a knock in training. Joshua King will assume Wilson's central striking role, with Junior Stanislas returning on the flank - having contributed three goals and two assists in the last three games before his injury.

As expected, Andrew Surman's hamstring injury keeps him out with ex-Newcastle midfielder Dan Gosling starting against his old team's fierce rivals.

Sunderland boss David Moyes makes three changes to the side that started against Arsenal last weekend. Defender John O'Shea has a hamstring injury so Papy Djilobodji replaces him. Paddy McNair and Victor Anichebe are in for Jack Rodwell and Wahbi Khazri.

    "Our fans love pain"

    Hello.

This week Sunderland manager David Moyes praised the club's supporters for... essentially not getting on his back.

It's now no wins in 10 games and only two points. Villa had four points at this stage last season.

The Scot, who took over from the departing Sam Allardyce just before the start of the season, used a meteorological phenomenon to describe the emotions of a Black Cats fan.

"I think they're willing to go through the pain if the thought is that there is a rainbow at the other end. I think they're willing to go through the pain if they have to," he said.

I think they'd prefer points right now David.

By the way, he'll be in the stands watching because he's serving a one-match touchline ban for swearing at the fourth official.

His counterpart Eddie Howe continues to do a remarkable job at the Cherries. They sit 10th and it's only one defeat in five.
