The system is certainly working for Stoke.

Defensively they are keeping it tight and the midfield are narrow and the ball is being forced into key areas for Stoke.

When they win the ball back they are able to find Crouch early and are getting support near him very, very, quickly.

Mame Diouf draws further audible frustration from the Liverpool fans as he drops to the turf ahead of receiving some treatment. He looks like he should be OK to continue, though, which only angers the Reds support further.

    Stoke have settled really well.

The first 10 minutes they were under pressure with Liverpool playing quick, incisive football but now Stoke are defending deep and have a real threat.

Allen and Walters are getting right up in support of Peter Crouch and Liverpool can't deal with the high balls.

    Liverpool 0-1 Stoke

This is a new experience for Liverpool this season. They haven't conceded the first goal at home in the league until now. Adam Lallana tries to rectify the situation but his effort on the turn is deflected behind. Again, they take a corner short and eventually work an opening for Roberto Firmino, whose low shot is blocked on the line by Peter Crouch. All Stoke hands to the pump.

Not only was Jonathan Walters' goal his sixth against Liverpool, it was also the 500th of the current Premier League season.

It also came with Stoke's first attempt on the opposition goal.

And it has rattled the Reds.....

The home fans are not happy. They were expecting to turn up here and see their side storm to victory. But Stoke aren't making it easy. A wall of noise roars on the men in red as Giannelli Imbula evades a series of challenges in midfield.

    The case for Joe Hart?

Johnny Magrinho: Awful goal to concede from Liverpool's point of view. Karius or Mignolet - neither seem to work. Joe Hart would've saved that..

Liverpool just can't cope with the high balls being played in. It is poor defensively.

Suddenly, Liverpool are all over the shop. Stoke come forward again and, through a mixture of determination and weak defending, Joe Allen is able to muscle his way into the box for a shot that Simon Mignolet saves with his boot. Peter Crouch is waiting to follow up but the ball passes him to Erik Peters, whose low shot is blocked.

Stoke are full of confidence now. They win a corner but waste it by hitting the first man, who clears.

There were a couple places Liverpool could have prevented that goal.

Lovren doesn't track the run and allows Walters to get the run but once the header was on target Mignolet should save it.

It was straight at him and he has weak hands and deflects it into his own goal.

Well, this wasn't in the script. Can Liverpool respond? James Milner tries to curl a shot on goal from a central area outside the box but misses the target by a yard or two.

I think Mignolet should save it. He gets into a good position and that is poor goalkeeping from his point of view.

If you put dangerous crosses into good areas, Liverpool are vulnerable.

    Jonathan Walters

Sucker punch. Stoke have been on the back foot for much of the opening to this game but when a real opportunity comes they seize it. Peter Crouch's header is blocked but the away side aren't letting it lie, reclaiming possession through Erik Pieters, who goes round the outside and crosses to the near post for Jonathan Walters to glance home a header. Simon Mignolet stuck out a hand but he wasn't strong enough.

Walters, an Everton fan, milks the moment in front of the Kop, much to the ire of the home fans.

That was better from Stoke. They dropped deeper and are not giving Liverpool space in behind.

That is where Liverpool will flourish if they continuously run off you but Stoke defending deeper is making Liverpool play in front of them.

It is difficult for the runners from deep to get on the ball from Liverpool's point of view.
