What if football was like life - played out in calendar years rather than seasons?

People are already wondering, out loud, whether their 2017 will be better than 2016 - as if the natural order of events has any regard for constructed time measurements.

Anyway, we've gone and crunched the numbers to establish who were the big cheeses in the Premier League in 2016.

Most points, most touches, meanest defence?

We've packed in the stats and you can see them all here.

  5. 'Liverpool could hurt Sunderland badly'published at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

    Sunderland v Liverpool (15:00 GMT)

    Kevin Kilbane
Former Everton winger on BBC Radio 5 live

David Moyes has been quite forthright and very open with his interviews. Sometimes a little bit too honest.

They were shambolic defensively the other day - something I have seen often this season. It is very untypical of David Moyes’ sides. The way he works on the back four defensively, the unit of the side, back to front.

They will have to be very tight today, because Liverpool with the way they are playing could hurt them very badly.

For David Moyes, this window it is probably going to be free transfers, maybe loan moves. I can’t see him being given an abundance of money to go on and strengthen the side.

"Liverpool ended 2016 still in touch with Chelsea and it's imperative they begin the new year in similar fashion.

"The victory over Manchester City was another psychological boost, now they face a physical test with another game in less than 48 hours. Belief is building all the time, as is momentum, and they will be confident of a third win in a row on the road.

"David Moyes will be desperate for some sort of Sunderland reaction, having labelled their defending in the defeat at Burnley as 'shambolic'.

"The very least the Wearside public expect is evidence of effort and fight - they will need both in abundance against Jurgen Klopp's side."

  7. Lallana the main man?published at 11:58 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

    Sunderland v Liverpool (15:00 GMT)

Liverpool will of course be without the influential Sadio Mane after today as he will attend the Africa Cup of Nations. Adam Lallana is however making a case to be the Reds' key instigator. His assist for the only goal against Manchester City the latest in a run of key moments of creativity.

Sunderland pair Victor Anichebe and Lamine Kone are major doubts for the visit of Liverpool after suffering hamstring and hip injuries respectively against Burnley.

Jason Denayer is also doubtful with a hamstring injury, while Billy Jones is serving a one-match suspension.

Liverpool could be without captain Jordan Henderson against his former club after he suffered a heel problem during the win over Manchester City.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp has no other fresh injury concerns.

  11. 'Another Burnley draw?'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

Manchester City v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day commentator

"On the face of it, a Manchester City slip up at home to Burnley seems highly unlikely but there's no hiding that they are not playing that well just now.

"For all their possession in the defeat at Anfield, City created little and lacked the dynamism that a fully match-fit Aguero gives them - four weeks out left him looking understandably diminished.

"Oddly, City have never won at home to Burnley in the Premier League (okay, they've only played them twice - both drawn), so should be a little wary.

"With back-to-back wins over Middlesbrough and Sunderland, Burnley almost have a free hit here, in the sense they can afford to try their luck knowing that defeat is far from calamitous."

Manchester City have no fresh injury concerns for the visit of Burnley.

Leroy Sane remains a doubt with a muscle injury, while captain Vincent Kompany is not yet ready to return from a knee problem.

Burnley's record signing Jeff Hendrick is available after suspension and could replace Dean Marney, who must serve a ban after picking up his fifth booking of the season on New Year's Eve.

Right-back Jon Flanagan will be missing because of a knee injury.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri: "This is an important match for both teams. We want to be strong and start 2017 well. A win important for points and for confidence.

"Islam Slimani has a fever and Danny Drinkwater is just back from injury so two matches in a row was a little dangerous."

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka: "We couldn't keep our performance against Manchester United right until the end. It was good against a top team and I told the players to try and recover as much as possible. I am expecting a really tough game today.

"We are in a good position in the table, we are competing in every single game and now it is about keeping going and creating chances."

  18. Lethargy and boo boyspublished at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

    Everton v Southampton (15:00 GMT)

    Mark Scott
    Match of the Day commentator

"While both clubs occupy decent positions in the table, there's an air of dissatisfaction amongst them as we hit the halfway stage of the season.

"Ronald Koeman has made it clear that he expects to be busy in the transfer window, and Everton look in need of reinforcements, with time seeming to be catching up with their ageing squad judging by some of their lethargic displays.

"There were boos from Southampton supporters after their loss to West Brom in another showing that lacked in penetration and purpose.

"Claude Puel's team look short of ideas and belief right now - another defeat would represent their worst losing run in the league for more than two years."

  19. No new concerns for Koemanpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has no new injury or suspension worries following Friday's 2-2 draw at Hull.

Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg is likely to miss a third successive game because of a dead leg.

Nathan Redmond is available after a ban, while Ryan Bertrand is back in the squad after being rested for the defeat by West Brom.
