It would have been hard to take your eyes off this game tonight, but there was some FA Cup action going on as well.

Before we get to Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez's thoughts, let's look at where that result leaves the two teams.

The Magpies remain top, but they will drop to second in the table if Brighton win at Cardiff on Saturday.

Nottingham Forest climb to 13th, just four points outside the play-off places as things stand.

  5. Newcastle hard done by - Lansburypublished at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2016

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Newcastle

Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury tells Sky Sports his thoughts on Paul Dummett's sending off:

"I think the new rule's a yellow card and a penalty, so I think they're a little hard done by."

  6. FULL-TIME: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Newcastlepublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2016

Nottingham Forest celebrate as the referee blows the full-time whistle.

That result lifts Philippe Montanier's side up to 13th in the table, with Nicklas Bendtner's tap in and an own goal from Jamaal Lascelles giving them the victory.

The big talking point though will be referee Stephen Martin's decisions to send two Newcastle players off.

    Nottingham Forest 2-1 Newcastle

Newcastle win a free-kick midway inside the Nottingham Forest half, but Matt Ritchie's delivery sails straight through to the goalkeeper.

The hosts are heading for a third straight win barring an unexpected late twist.

What do nine-man Newcastle have left in the tank?

There will be four minutes of added time for the visitors to find an unlikely equaliser.

GOAL: Jamaal Lascelles own goalpublished at 86 mins

    Nottingham Forest 2-1 Newcastle

Joy for Nottingham Forest - despair for Newcastle.

Henri Lansbury's corner zips through a host of bodies, eventually deflecting in off Jamaal Lascelles, who turns into his own goal under pressure from Matty Cash.

Newcastle respond by throwing Aleksandar Mitrovic on for Dwight Gayle. Just two minutes are left in normal time.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow takes his time over a goal-kick - you can't blame him given the situation, but he needs to be a bit careful having been booked earlier.

I can't pick which way this game's going to go - let me know using the hashtag #bbcefl if you can.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Henri Lansbury slides a pass through to Britt Assombalonga inside the Newcastle box, but the striker's touch is heavy and the visitors can clear.

This is absolutely gripping viewing. Just eight minutes of the 90 remain.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Less than 15 minutes now for nine-man Newcastle to cling on to a point, and they introduce Mohamed Diame to try to see out the final stages.

Incredibly, they come close to retaking the lead as Isaac Hayden bends a shot just wide of Vladimir Stojkovic's goal.

Forest are still dominating the game, and they bring on Apostolos Vellios to try to make the crucial difference up front. Nicklas Bendtner is the man to make way.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury, involved in both Newcastle's sending offs, now goes into the book himself for a cynical trip on DeAndre Yedlin.

Nicklas Bendtner has another effort on goal, but his shot is blocked behind for yet another Forest corner.

Bendtner's there to meet it with a flicked header, which Newcastle are somehow able to clear away from goal.

Mustapha Carayol gets his first real chance to influence the match since coming on, picking the ball up on the left and cutting inside onto his right foot.

The former Middlesbrough man gets a shot away and on target, but too close to Karl Darlow to worry the Newcastle keeper.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Referee Stephen Martin continues to dominate the discussion on the #bbcefl hashtag.

Roger: 2 Forest players just collided in the NUFC box and fell down; I amazed this ref didn't award them each a penalty

Graham Magennis: Not seen as one-sided a reffing performance since Brian Coddington. Shockingly inconsistent.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

A rare burst forward for Newcastle, as Dwight Gayle picks the ball up midway inside the Forest half and gets a shot away.

It's a comfortable save in the end, but still some encouragement for the 1,866 Newcastle fans who have made the trip to the City Ground.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Newcastle's defensive strategy is clear - force Nottingham Forest to go wide, then try to defend the cross.

Aside from the early equaliser, the tactic is working so far, with the home fans starting to express a bit of frustration.

Forest add another attacking threat to the mix, bringing Mustapha Carayol on for Thomas Lam.

Almost an opening for Nicklas Bendtner as Ben Osborn gets free down the left and hangs a cross towards the striker at the back post.

Bendtner gets the timing of his jump just wrong and he's unable to connect.

A little under 30 minutes plus added time for someone to find a winner.

    Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle

Since conceding, Newcastle have tightened up again at the back, but it's still hard to imagine anything other than a Forest win from this position.

As you'd expect, it's wave upon wave of attacks from the Reds, with the visitors unable to keep hold of the ball for any length of time.

Another card for Newcastle, this time Yoan Gouffran booked for bringing down Ben Osborn. It's a touch soft, you have to say.

Forest boss Philippe Montanier will be delighted with that early goal - the nerves around the City Ground seem to have lifted once more.
