England have to get closer to van de Sanden, but they are scared to get too close because they know she has the pace to get beyond.

  2. 'What a first touch that was!'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

What a first touch that was by Toni Duggan to wrongfoot the defender. She could have made the square pass to Karen Carney, but as a striker, you cannot criticise her for having a go herself.

This match needs an injection of magic and the player most likely to provide is Shanice van de Sanden. Another dash down the right flank from the Dutchwoman, another corner for the Netherlands... Once again, however, England's defence holds firm.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 67 mins

    Netherlands Wome 0-0 England Women

Another substitution for the Netherlends, with Jill Roord replacing Lieke Martens, who was one of her team's most dangerous players in the first half.

  5. CLOSE!published at 65 mins

Brilliant play by Toni Duggan, weaving into the box, drawing a fine save from Loes Geurts, It would have been a wonderful solo strike.

  6. 'Taylor is a natural goalscorer'published at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

Jodie Taylor had an Achilles injury that kept her out for a number of games, but she came back for Arsenal and scored a couple of goals against Doncaster. She is that type of player -a natural goalscorer who can hold up the ball and bring other players into the game. She will play centrally, while Duggan will play wide on the left and cut in on her favoured left foot.

The Dutch gradually asserting their authority on this half, starving England of possession and chances. Much of the play taking place in England's half, which is a worry for Mark Sampson and his team.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 58 mins

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

A first substitution of the match for England, with Jill Scott replaced by Jodie Taylor, which suggests a change of formation for the visitors.

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

England clear a free-kick and the ball falls to Shanice van de Sanden on the edge of the box, but the Liverpool player is a tad off-balance and balloons her effort into the stands.

England in possession more often than not, the passing is crisper, it has more purpose. The visitors are still waiting to create a chance to test Loes Geurts, however, but patience is a virtue, so they say, and we've all been very very patient.

Karen Carney with a peach of a pass towards Jill Scott on the right, but Scott is unable to pick out another player in white and the move comes to a halt. It's a more promising start for the visitors, though, who are more sure in possession.

  12. 'Players need to be versatile'published at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

It is difficult for Izzy Christiansen, an attacking player who plays centrally, to play wide on the right, and she has been pegged back by the Dutch. You have Alex Scott and Lucy Bronze who can play in that right wing-back role, but I think Mark Sampson is trying things out with Izzy. It is important for players to be versatile going into big tournaments.

Isobel Christiansen attempts to pick out Toni Duggan, who has made a dash towards the inside right but the peerless Van der Gragt sniffs out the danger. A timid start to this half so far.

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

Ellen Janssen gets the second half under way, and Shanice van de Sanden attacks immediately down the right flank, placing a low cross into the box which Karen Bardsley calmly gathers.

  15. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

There wasn't much to report about in that opening 45 minutes. The Oranje were the better side, but failed to carve out clear chances, while England were reduced to a couple of hopeful long-distance shots from Karen Carney.

  16. 'England's passing need to be crisper'published at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Sue Smith
Former England forward on BBC Red Button

England's passing need to be crisper. When they have done that, and made one or two-touch passes, they have got themselves into some good positions. It has been a decent exercise, but Mark Sampson may change his personnel or his formation in the second half, as the Netherlands have had slightly the better of the game..

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45 mins

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

The half-time whistle rings around the stadium, bringing a forgettable first half to an end.

  18. 'You need those leaders to take control'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Sue Smith
Former England forward on BBC Red Button

Mark Sampson is giving tactical instructions, and I am trying to lipread what he is saying! But actually Mark allows players to take responsibility when they are on the pitch. There is only so much he can do before a game, so you need those leaders to take control on the field.

  19. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Netherlands Women 0-0 England Women

Shanice van de Sanden steals the ball from Steph Houghton but the England defender is off the hook as the Dutch winger is unable to conjure any magic this time. England hearts were beating a tad quicker for a second, though.

England upping the tempo. Isobel Christiansen dances into the box and nearly releases Toni Duggan, who has often been isolated up front on her own in this half.
