    Burton v Newcastle (15:00 GMT)

    NewcastleImage source, Rex Features

No Championship side has won more points on the road this season than Newcastle. Rafa Benitez's side have picked up 25 of them and sit pretty at the top of the Championship.

After breezing past Wigan on Wednesday, the Magpies travel to another struggling team today in Burton.

But the Brewers have lost just one in their last six at home and will probably be relying on that to stay up - having yet to win away yet this season.

Sheffield Wednesday v Rotherham (15:00 GMT)

BBC Sport's Seth Bennett at Hillsborough:

"Peter Odemwingie returns as one of two changes for Rotherham United.

"Sheffield Wednesday will be without influential midfielder Barry Bannan, as they look for their first home league victory over their local rivals in 35 years.

"Not a sell-out by any stretch of the imagination, around 1,000 Millers fans are in the away end, as plenty don't make the eight-mile journey in a protest over ticket prices."

    Gianfranco ZolaImage source, Rex Features

The fun doesn't stop come 16:50. Today's evening match provides more intrigue than your normal match between two promotion hopefuls.

On Wednesday the EFL world was shocked to see Gary Rowett lose his job as Birmingham City manager, to almost immediately be replaced by former West Ham and Watford boss Gianfranco Zola.

Rowett left after two years in charge with the club with Blues just outside the Championship play-off places.

Can Zola continue the Rowett's good work? And surely Rowett won't be out of a job for very long...

How about this for a gesture from Yeovil Town?

The matchday squad and coaching staff have left vouchers with a value of £300, external behind the bar to enable Glovers fans to enjoy refreshments at Brunton Park.

Accrington and Plymouth were both in the play-offs last season, but this term their form could not be much different.

At the start of Saturday Argyle were top of the table, while Stanley are just above the relegation places.

Promotion rivals Carlisle are at home to Yeovil in a 660-mile round trip for the Somerset side, while Doncaster beat Grimsby 1-0 in the early kick-off to move a point above Plymouth before their game.

Barnsley travel to Cardiff today in a re-run of the 2008 FA Cup semi-final, when Tykes striker Kayode Odejayi famously missed a glorious chance as the Welsh side reached the final.

Cardiff also have the upper hand in league matches between the two sides, having lost just two of their last 15 against Barnsley, with both defeats coming in the 2009-10 season.

Neil Warnock has won four of his first 10 matches in charge of Cardiff, taking them out of the Championship relegation zone.

You'd think that losing two of your players to suspension for fighting each other on the pitch would upset your team's form.

    Not Preston.

Since Jermaine Beckford and Eoin Doyle were sent off against Sheffield Wednesday Simon Grayson's side beat rivals Blackburn last weekend and earned a well-deserved draw at Nottingham Forest in midweek.

Today North End take on a Bristol City side that have lost five of their last six Championship games.

Well, not quite yet, but we've only got to wait eight more sleeps, right?

And so, with that in mind, we thought it might be an appropriate time to put together a list of Christmas-themed footballers in the EFL.

Frankincense Fielding in goal? Christmas Berra at the back? Darren Way in a manger as manager?

Yeah, we know, not the best. But we firmly believe you can do better - and you can prove us right by tweeting us your suggestions via #bbcefl.

Nottingham Forest's takeover by an American consortium is edging ever closer and on the pitch things have become slightly more rosy recently, with just one defeat in their last five matches after a run of one win in 11 league games.

Philippe Montanier's side today take on a club who have recently gone through the takeover process in Wolves.

But so far it's not gone so well for the new Chinese owners, having already sacked Walter Zenga and new boss Paul Lambert has won just one of his five games in charge.

    LeedsImage source, Rex Features

Leeds have been perennial under-achievers in the Championship over the past few seasons, but under Garry Monk they may have finally got things right.

Monk's side are sixth in the table coming up to Christmas and have only lost once at home since mid-September - to leaders Newcastle.

Today's opposing manager, Brentford's Dean Smith - has high praise for Monk, whom he played with at Sheffield Wednesday.

"It is no surprise he went into the management game," said Smith. "I thought he did really well at Swansea and stamped his own style on the team. He has taken that to Leeds now and is doing very well."

The Latics have failed to find the net in five of their last six Championship games, while Ipswich have failed to score in four of their last six away league games.

Just watch that all change today now I've said that...

Since Steve McClaren took charge of Derby County, the Rams have ramped up the Championship table with eight wins in 10 matches to leave them fifth.

Even better, seven of those wins have come in the last seven games; their longest streak in the Championship since December 2013.

Today he takes his side to Craven Cottage to face a Fulham side who cannot pick striker Chris Martin, on loan from Derby.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side are unbeaten in their last five matches at home and are three points outside of the play-off places.

At Hillsborough there's a South Yorkshire derby today between two sides with contrasting fortunes this season.

Rotherham, bottom of the Championship table, have already gone through two managers in Alan Stubbs and Kenny Jackett, and are still 12 points from safety under caretaker Paul Warne.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday are seventh in the table under Carlos Carvalhal. But Wednesday are winless in their last five home league games against Rotherham, since a 2-0 win in September 1981.

Could the form tables be turned today?

    Onto today then.

When Newcastle United finished runners-up in the 1996-97 Premier League, Burton Albion were in the Southern Premier League.

A year later, Nigel Clough became Brewers manager and the rise of the Staffordshire side has been monumental, reaching the Football League for the first time in 2009 before successive promotions have taken them into the second-tier of English football.

After spells at Sheffield United and Derby Clough is back at the Pirelli Stadium and will lead his side in their first-ever meeting against Championship leaders Newcastle in front of a sell-out crowd.
