    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Having made a big song and dance about Daniel Sturridge in my opening couple of entries, I don't think I've mentioned him during the game until now. Very quiet, but then he hasn't had much service.

The ball is down the other end of the pitch at the moment with Steven Davis, who crosses from the right but can't find a fellow Southampton player.

The big guns are out for Barcelona. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar - who has not scored a goal in domestic football since 2 October - all start as the Catalans kick off the second leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie against Athletic Bilbao.

The visitors leave top scorer Aritz Aduriz - who has scored more goals against Luis Enrique's Barca than any other player - on the bench.

Elsewhere, Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic have already put Coppa Italia holders Juventus 2-0 ahead against Atalanta, while Paris St-Germain are yet to make a breakthrough against Metz in the French Coupe de la Ligue.

There is no width for Liverpool on either side, it's all very congested. The team is imbalanced as Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana are not really wide players.

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool really lacking a creative spark at the moment, with the ball going from side to side. There's a hint of frustration from the away end. Not happening for the visitors at the moment.

  5. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

A little over 10 minutes to go until half-time and Southampton's lead is not looking in any danger. Liverpool have had plenty of the ball, but only managed one shot on target.

Philippe Coutinho is warming up for the Reds, I wonder how long before Jurgen Klopp decides to send him on?

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Southampton free-kick? Lucas goes flying in on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, sending the Southampton man sprawling on the pitch right on the edge of Liverpool area. Referee waves play on and replays show Lucas got the ball. Close call, though, he went flying in.

Simon Atkins: I wish Birmingham had never let Redmond go. Class act, and one of the best youngsters to come out of the club in my lifetime!

Stuart Thomson: Love the Liverpool kit. Son got it for Xmas and you can see him for miles in it!

Good header from Jay Rodriguez to send James Milner's corner away from danger, but Liverpool pick up the ball once again and resume the attack. Southampton under a bit of pressure at the moment.

    Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

Interesting to see what Southampton do now. Will they look to protect this slender advantage? Or go all out to put themselves in command ahead of the second leg, but risk Liverpool snatching an equaliser?

The Reds are immediately on the hunt for that equaliser as Adam Lallana skips past Jordy Clasie on the edge of the area and finds James Milner just inside the box, but his cross is deflected behind for a corner.

Liverpool had controlled possession for the early stages but Southampton's sudden surge of pressure brought that goal, very coolly finished by Nathan Redmond.

Saints fans had been showing signs of early anxiety but that goal has certainly calmed the nerves for now.

The warning signs were there for Liverpool. They played the offside trap and it didn't work, Nathan Redmond is onside and he got the angle to shoot across the keeper.

There was enough pace on the ball to see it into the corner and Southampton are rewarded for a good spell of pressure.

    Nathan Redmond

    Well, well, well!

Liverpool, the favourites to win this tie, are behind as Southampton make the most of a little spell of pressure.

Moments after Nathan Redmond had a shot denied by Loris Karius, the midfielder beats the Liverpool keeper as he races onto Jay Rodriguez's through ball after Ragnar Klavan was caught out of position and fires low into the corner.

  15. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

Best chance of the game so far and it falls for Liverpool as Adam Lallana knocks a high ball down for Roberto Firmino in the middle of the box and the forward shoots first time but Fraser Forster tips over.

Third time lucky? There was nothing lucky about Barcelona's Copa del Rey triumphs in 2015 and 2016, but if they do overcome Athletic tonight - who Barca beat in the final two years ago - then they are a step closer to lifting the trophy again.

No team has won three consecutive Copa del Reys - translated as the King's Cup in English - since the 1950s. Who? Barcelona, of course.

Liverpool cranking up the pressure now as Southampton drop back to the edge of their box. Adam Lallana tries to slip a ball inside Nathan Redmond for Nathaniel Clyne on the right, but Redmond has the pace to get back and clear.

Maya Yoshida is doing brilliantly for Jose Fonte tonight. His performance so far has got Fonte another year on his contract and another 10 grand a week!

Maya Yoshida sends Cedric scampering backwards to chase what should have been a fairly routine square pass. A nervy performance from Yoshida so far, Liverpool will look to exploit that.

Pretty uneventful start to the game. Southampton were bright early on but Liverpool have come into it more in the last few minutes. No chances of note yet.
