In front of a Women's FA Cup final record crowd of 35,271, Manchester City dominate Birmingham to lift the famous cup for the first time.

Victory affirms their dominance of the English game, while Birmingham City will rue their performance.

The domestic set is now complete for Manchester City Women.

And, as Steph Houghton alluded to in the build-up to this game, the FA Cup is the one they've always wanted, ever since they started putting together this formidable team in 2014.

Next stop? European glory. Their target now is to add the Women's Champions League to their ever-expanding trophy cabinet. It would take a brave person to bet against them achieving that soon.

Birmingham will have a lot of lessons to learn. From a football point of view they will learn that in the big games you have to play what is in front of you.

They stuck to the plan, which is honest, but it was the wrong plan and they should have adapted."

Manchester City came with a huge reputation, eight Euro 2017-bound England internationals and Carli Lloyd, the two-time World Player of the Year.

Three of those Lionesses, Lucy Bronze, Izzy Christiansen and Jill Scott were among the scorers, as was was Lloyd, as Manchester City clinched their first ever Women's FA Cup in style.

Why celebrate just once, when you can go back down to the pitch to thrust the Women's FA Cup into the air again on a drop-in stage?

Just like it did in the stands, the streamers and ticker tape rains down. Players go crazy with delight, plenty of pictures taken. 

All very colourful, loud and glorious for Manchester City.

Birmingham City were well beaten in the end, but it is not all doom and gloom according to former England forward Sue Smith.  

"I think it's the experience and they've played a lot better in the second half. They are a young team and they'll learn from this experience and I'm sure they'll bounce back," Smith said on BBC Two.

World player of the year and Manchester City goalscorer Carli Lloyd told BBC Two: 

"It was a fantastic team performance. 

"This team has been trying to win this trophy for sometime and I've just come along in the last few months to push that a long. 

"This win shows the character of the team, and I've really enjoyed my time here."

Manchester City's triumphant players are now walking up those famous steps... the Women's FA Cup trophy will be in their possession in just moments...

Man City's winning manager Nick Cushing told BBC Two:

"The aim after winning the double was definitely to win the FA Cup. 

"We've been good in every round, but with all the games and travel we've had recently, to come here and win 4-1 is an exceptional."

Birmingham City players make what will feel like an excruciatingly long walk up the the Wembley Stadium steps to collect their runners-up medals.

Disappointment is etched in every single one of their faces.

Manchester City captain Steph Houghton told BBC Two:

"Being favourites put us under a tiny bit of pressure, but this is what this team is all about - big players who can cope with big occasion and that showed in the first half when we were unbelievable. 

"I'm just delighted for every single one of us."

"It feels unbelievable. It is considered the biggest trophy in England and the only one we had not won so far. It is a great feeling to take it back to Manchester."

Manchester City, 2017 Women's FA Cup winners!

They have been a class above today. Clinical and, at times, simply superb.

Carli Lloyd is trying to shrug off Aoife Mannion and she races towards the box.

Defender Mannion stops her in her tracks with a foul. 

She is shown a yellow card for her efforts. Luckily, support was closing in because that had send-off written all over it.

The fourth official's board flashes that there are four minutes of injury time remaining.

Jess Carter hasn't made a huge impression on the contest today... but she certainly would have left a mark on Abbie McManus with the tackle that earns her a yellow card.

As full-time approaches, Birmingham make their final change as Abbey-Leigh Stringer replaces Paige Williams.

Manchester City's grasp on this game has been tight since 32 minutes when they went 3-0 up.

It's fair to say the Women's FA Cup is theirs now... (or it has been since Jill Scott restored their three-goal advantage five minutes ago).
