Southampton

Southampton manager Claude Puel said: "We started well, a fantastic goal from Gabbiadini but after that we made mistakes and it was difficult.

"In the second half we had many chances but without the possibility to come back. We have the quality to play, to score, now we need to keep a clean sheet. We have to correct this and find a clean sheet and find confidence about the situation."

On Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini, who scored on his debut, Puel added: "I’m happy with his first game. We saw a great player for the future. He is technical, gives solutions, sees the game and is a very interesting player."

On their defensive problems, which has now seen them concede 10 goals in three matches, the Frenchman said: "It is important to give confidence to the squad about the defensive chances. We can’t replace the best defender (the injured Virgil Van Dijk) in the Premier League."

West Ham United

West Ham defender Jose Fonte, who played against his former club Southampton, said: "The move is still fresh and only a couple of weeks ago I was still a Southampton player.

"No doubt it was tough, but the main thing is to stay focused on the game and do my job the best I could.

"It was almost eight seasons so it was tough but with the help of my team-mates and West Ham supporters the most important thing was achieving what we got - the three points.

"I always gave my best for Southampton, my sweat and blood so my conscience is clear. The past was good but now I look forward to the new challenge ahead of me."

West Ham United

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "The guys were fantastic, we had a gameplan and they executed it in the best way. We were solid behind the ball, we kept the ball, attacked well and it was a great team performance.

"We have a team that is working hard for each other. We have a brilliant atmosphere in the dressing room, not because Payet left, but because we have won six of nine. It is a crazy league and there are 42 points to play for. There are crazy results and that is why we have to keep playing as we are."

On Andy Carroll, who scored his fourth goal in four games, Bilic added: "He is an matured man. He is happy, stable, has got three kids. The key is that and the number of training sessions. The best prevention of injuries is training."

On West Ham defender Jose Fonte, who played well against his former team, Bilic said: "It is good to find out some inside things and he helped us with that. It was very special for him and to come here and play so good it makes it a little bit more special for him than the other guys."

Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri: "Our first half performance was better than our second, and this is why I’m very angry. The big teams close these games 3-0, or 4-0, and we didn’t do it. We have to grow in this mentality.

"This year, our objective is to stay in the Premier League and becoming an important team. We have to work on this, and keep doing what we’re doing."

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, on why he went in to see referee Michael Oliver after the game: "I was only merely asking why M'Baye Niang wasn’t sent off. He had been booked earlier, then ran into their crowd to celebrate his goal, and you’re not allowed to do that.

"It wasn't so much about our sending off. It’s a tough one for referees. I don’t think there was a lot of actual contact, but we know most times that’s going to be a sending off.

"I thought we were absolutely outstanding in the second half. We had a couple of real good chances. They had one golden moment when Tom Heaton made a great save. But given it was 10 v 11, we were excellent."

West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss Tony Pulis: “It was a big game for us because they’re very close in the table. If you look at the squad they are a top 10 side. It was a really good result for us.

 "I thought we played really well. The worst thing about the first half was the half-time whistle. They had two chances, but I can’t remember too much more. We’re really pleased because it’s against a club with a lot of decent players.

"I’m not interested in Saido. I’m more concerned about my players andhow well we played."

On not shaking Hughes' hand: "I shook hands with Eddie [Niedzwiecki, Stoke coach] and Mark was walking away towards their supporters so that was that."

Stoke City

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: “We were poor first half and didn’t start brightly enough.  We made it difficult for ourselves by virtue of how we started and didn’t improve a great deal in the first half. We were a bit better in the second half and Pieters should have got us the equaliser but the story for us is how we started. 

"It’s a frustration if your performance levels aren’t at where you know they are capable of. We’ve played a lot better than today. We’ve been on a decent run and have been playing well but for whatever reason it wasn’t good enough

"I was disappointed in the referee to be perfectly honest. West Brom were winning so they weren’t going to rush to get the ball back into play so he allowed himself to be messed around in that regard.

[On Pulis not shaking his hand] "I was there. If he came over I would have shook it. He didn’t shake my hand at the start of the game either. I was the guest of the club surely."

Crystal Palace

More from Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce: "Today is so disappointing after the success at Bournemouth.

"I thought we had turned a corner, everyone was excellent. Today I saw fear strike the players. Passing the ball to each other became a problem. 

"When we concede the first goal the players lose what we are trying to do.

"We don't seem to be able to pull ourselves together and say 'don't concede another'. We could have easily got back 1-1. 

"We have a lot to do. It was a huge shock for me what I saw today. The lads find it difficult to play here at the moment."

"We have got to rebuild a bit more confidence again. I thought it was growing. We have a problem we have got to cure." 

Asked if refereeing decisions went against his side: "Perhaps, but the refereeing decision weren't as bad as we were, were they?"

And asked how much the defeat hurt him, Allardyce said: "Deeply. As long as I have been doing this job I am slightly in shock at what I have watched. I will try guide the lads through it."

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce: "The fear we are suffering here (Selhurst Park) is evident. Like Swansea, the last time we had a big game here.

"Fear gripped the players and it hasn't allowed them to express their ability. I cant think it can be anything other than that.

"It is a difficult one because the fans are so good here. They come to support the club. It was a sellout today. They are desperate for the club to do well.

"It is not often the players get much stick but they deserved the booing. I have to apologise for the first half and say it is my responsibility to get it right."

More from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "Yes we have quality still but we have to show it, it’s not to talk about it or to find excuses. Maybe a few teams have found a solution to us but that doesn’t matter because we are making chances and should score goals.

"We have to earn it, deserve it, with the effort that you put into a game. We have to bring the quality that we have consistently. I don’t want to find excuses, it is hard to think of intelligent things to say after a match like this.

"It is not the time to talk about these things [qualifying for the Champions League], we have to show our best and then people can judge us. We all know how good we can be, and it’s still there, but not if we play like we did in the first half today."

Hull City

Hull City manager Marco Silva: "It is fantastic, a fantastic afternoon for us. Our supporters were fantastic, we need them and they support our tem always. Our players showed fantastic spirit, our organisation was good and we deserved the win. 

"I am sure in the future we will play better, but at these moments we need to keep our focus and our organisation, because every game it is possible to get valuable points.

"In the Premier League it is fantastic to get clean sheets, to do that against Manchester United and Liverpool is fantastic.

"I know why I came here, I am here to work with my players and staff and to remain in the Premier League. It’s important for us to take points, and three points here is fantastic."

Hull achieved their 2-0 win with just 28% possession. 

A hugely frustrating day for Liverpool as a winless 2017 continues. Could their place in the top four be in danger?

Everton

Everton manager Ronald Koeman told BBC Sport: "That's not a normal result. It was a crazy game.

"Both teams changed systems, it was a tactical battle. They made it really difficult for us. We dropped in intesity after half-time, but the reaction to them getting bacl to 3-2 was good.

"We scored great goals. Romelu showed that he is one of the best finishers in football.

"Scoring is one of his big qualities. We need to support him, to create. We can improve, but he showed his best today. I'm not surprised because we see it in training.

"We are getting closer to the top six. We have momentum and we are confident. It's a long way to go until the end of the season. If we keep this up, everything is possible."

Nine games without a win, including eight defeats. That was Bristol City's league record before today. But that run has ended. Milan Djuric scored the goal to give beleaguered manager Lee Johnson a priceless 1-0 victory against Rotherham.

Meanwhile, Newcastle returned to the top of the table with a 1-0 win against Derby, and there was drama at the bottom of the table, with both Blackburn and Burton scoring late, late winners to earn invaluable victories.

In League One, Sheffield United leapfrogged Scunthorpe at the league's summit, beating Wimbledon 3-0 as the latter fell to a 3-1 defeat at Southend.

And Doncaster dropped points as Morecambe earned a valuable point against League Two's top side.
