That's a great tackle from Marcos Rojo, he had to get it right and he did, taking the ball from Diego Costa when a penalty looked likely.

Chelsea aren't afraid to shoot on sight.

No Premier League team has scored more goals from outside the box than the Blues in all competitions this season, with 13 goals coming from outside the opposition box.

Seven of their 12 attempts tonight have come from long-range, although N'Golo Kante's goal has been the only one on-target.

    Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

The Chelsea players are queuing up to have a go from the edge of the box now. They pull the massed Manchester United defence from side to side. N'Golo Kante tees up Willian, who curls a shot onto the roof of the net. About a foot over.

Marcos Rojo is warned for some off-the ball mixing with Diego Costa. Watch this space.

The ball is whipped in and Diego Costa moves on to it beautifully. He is completely unopposed but it hits him on the shoulder. He has to score from there.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea needed that breakthrough to try to tempt Manchester United out of their shell and N'Golo Kante has done the job. He has put £89m Paul Pogba in the shade all night and has now added a goal to his contribution.

What have 10-man Manchester United got to give now? Marcus Rashford still looks their best hope.

  6. CLOSE!published at 60 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United have a corner, and it's almost their undoing. Chelsea counter at pace, they have an overload at the back post but Willian's cutback is hacked clear by a sliding Chris Smalling.

Diego Costa then has a free header inside the area but duffs it wide, off his shoulder. That was a real chance for two.

I have to say, the young man Rashford here is world class the way he creates the opening. But what an unbelievable save from the keeper.

That's the chance Manchester United were waiting for.

I don't know what David Luiz was thinking. You could tell by Gary Cahill's face that he was panicking when Rashford started running at him.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 59 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Brilliant from Marcus Rashford! That's what he can do, he turns a nothing clearance into a great ball, David Luiz makes a mess of winning it on halfway and Rashford smells blood.

He beats Gary Cahill on the inside, then the outside, and tests Thibaut Courtois with a left-footed shot. Such an exciting player!

Lewis Wright: No matter how many plaudits he receives, N'Golo Kante just cannot be appreciated enough. Quite simply immense

Steve: If Kante adds regular goal scoring to his game, he'll be bordering on priceless. Pogba meanwhile...

Lord Andrew Dennett: Yet again Pogba is just an expensive non-existent haircut!!

Phil Jones is telling Paul Pogba how to play in midfield. Not sure the world's most expensive footballer will enjoy that too much. Jones wants Pogba to get tighter to those 20-yard shots.

Chelsea have had 70% of possession since half time but they can't get into the Manchester United area to be honest. The United gameplan was working until N'Golo Kante scored from range.

It will be interesting to see if Mourinho changes anything, or if he is able to? They can't get hold of the ball at the moment.

The Chelsea fans are really enjoying this, almost 'ole' stuff as the men in blue pop together 10 or 15 passes before Cesar Azplicueta shoots over from 20 yards.

    Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United will have to have a rethink now. The gameplan was to sit, contain and frustrate, and maybe hit Marcus Rashford on the break.

Now they need to find a goal.

That's the last thing you expect from N'Golo Kante! He gave David De Gea the eyes and whipped it into the bottom corner. This guy just goes from strength to strength.

What a shot that is. It has to be something special to beat De Gea. He is back in his goal but he is unable to get over to save the shot. He is caught out by surprise, it is so far away.

    Kante from 20 yards!published at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

Who saw that coming?! N'Golo Kante is brilliant at lots of things but 20-yarders are not one you expect!

He scores his second goal for Chelsea, and a second against Manchester United. Paul Pogba is maybe a bit slow to shut him down but Kante has the element of surprise behind him, and beats David de Gea with a low, accurate shot into the corner.
