I tell you what, this Jeff Reine-Adelaide looks a player as well. Full of confidence, the French 19-year-old midfielder. Just like the rest of his side.

Maybe Arsene Wenger should be up in the stands every week...

Will: Hope Saints go on to get demolished here for treating the Cup like a throwaway game.

James Stringer: DO NOT MESS THIS UP ARSENAL!!!!

No danger of that so far James...

  3. 'Really sloppy defending from Saints'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2017

Welbeck did absolutely brilliantly, he looks really sharp.

You have to say Walcott does very well, but McQueen is asleep at the far post, his body is closed and he doesn't see Walcott coming.

It was the sort of goal you'd see on a training ground when you're playing against the reserves and they're not really concentrating - really sloppy defending.

    Theo Walcott

Pace, so much pace. And the poise to match it. Arsenal are cruising as Theo Walcott sweeps in.

Lucas Perez finds Danny Welbeck with another perfectly weighted pass behind the Southampton back-line, Welbeck motors down the inside channel and cuts back for Walcott to prod home, sliding in before his marker.

Two goals and an assist on Welbeck's return. Not bad.

  5. CLOSE!published at 33 mins

    Southampton 0-2 Arsenal

It's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who steps up...

Ooooh. Into the side netting. Part of the crowd must have thought that ripple meant a goal.

David Osipina looks on coolly, but a few inches west and he would have been nowhere near a stunning goal.

Nice from Josh Sims. The 19-year-old winger robs Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, has a shot blocked, and then Kieran Gibbs is penalised for a searching trip on Shane Long.

    Southampton free-kick on the edge...

Eamonn McGurk: Great to see Danny Welbeck back and on the score sheet!

David Randall: Was Welbeck going for "Salt Bae" or "I'm a little teapot" with that celebration?

Lucas Perez is lumped out of it by Sam McQueen's untidy challenge. Perez had it through his legs, lovely.

And from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's whipped free-kick, Shkodran Mustafi has to score. Head and shoulders above his marker, the German centre-back sees his nodded effort slip wide of the far stick.

    He had to score.

Southampton are fielding a weakened side and also seem to be suffering the mother and father of all hangovers after reaching the EFL Cup Final.

Arsenal's own line-up has an experimental look but they are ripping Saints to shreds here, with Danny Welbeck showing what Arsenal have been missing during his absence.

The mood of celebration  around St, Mary's before kick-off has, to put it politely, been dampened.

Shane Long is set clear by a curved long pass round the back from Cuco Martina and thrashes a strike towards goal, on target but comfortably tipped wide by David Ospina.

Claude Puel pumps fist into hand on the sidelines. Finally some signs of life from his Southampton side.

  14. CHANCE!published at 24 mins

    Southampton 0-2 Arsenal

Decent chance for Southampton this... but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg booms over the bar on the volley from just inside the Arsenal area. Their first real sight on goal. It was a difficult chance. Was there more time though?

Another very simple goal. Southampton undone, unusually, by a long ball over the top from Arsenal.

I thought the chance had gone because Welbeck's first touch pushed him out wide, but he got just enough on the finish to slide the ball underneath the on-rushing 'keeper.

GOAL - Southampton 0-2 Arsenalpublished at 22 mins

    Danny Welbeck

If we're talking long passes and exquisite finishes though... I tell you what, this is no sloucher.

Again it's brilliant from Danny Welbeck, who races on to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's floated ball over the top, brings it down with a stride, and pokes home. Fantastic goal.

He now has two goals in about 20 minutes on his first start back since nine months out with a serious knee injury.

    Southampton 0-1 Arsenal

Rob Holding and Theo Walcott try to re-create Dennis Bergkamp's goal for Netherlands against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. The defender's pass is good, long over the top... will we ever see a touch like Bergkamp's again? Kill the ball with one touch? A sublime finish?

Unfortunately for all involved, there's no-one quite like Dennis. It runs away.

    Southampton 0-1 Arsenal

    Danny Mills

Southampton look a little bit in awe of this Arsenal team - they've got a couple of decent players out there but it isn't a fantastic Arsenal team.

Southampton need to get in their faces a little more and break up play.

    Southampton 0-1 Arsenal

There wasn't a lot 20-year-old Southampton keeper Harry Lewis might have done about that. He was off his line quickly but Arsenal's play just cut through so quickly, and with such ease.

They are looking pretty comfortable now the Gunners, flicking the ball around. Very little sign of a Southampton threat.

What an outstanding finish from Danny Welbeck, absolutely superb.

It's the first piece of real quality, a little toe-poke--scoop over the top of the keeper, in off the underside of the bar.

    It's absolutely magnificent.
