Before the games today, we asked whether the battle at the bottom of the table was as good as the one for promotion at the top end.

I'm no clearer to answering that question definitively.

However, what I do know is that the EFL, and the Championship in particular, is as exciting as any league in Europe.

We saw a shock at St James', drama in Cardiff and particularly at Wigan, and quality at Deepdale to name but four games.

Fulham and Preston did their hopes of making the play-off a world of good with convincing victories against teams in the upper reaches.

The former were excellent at St James' Park in beating Newcastle 3-1, while Preston shredded Reading 3-0 at Deepdale thanks to a Tom Barkhuizen masterclass.

Tim Ream's missed spot kick for Fulham (see below) could have given them even stronger goal difference, something that could prove pivotal come May.

We've had some reaction to Tim Ream's decision to take Fulham's penalty at St James' Park, denying 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon a hat-trick. Ream missed with his side 3-1 up...

Newcastle United, beaten at home for the fifth time this season, miss the chance to pull clear of Brighton & Hove Albion after today's loss to Fulham.

Huddersfield edge clear of the chasing pack in third with their 1-0 win at Brentford, while Leeds United, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday all failed to win to lose ground.

Wins for Wolves and Bristol City ease their troubles somewhat - although only goal difference keeps the latter out the bottom three after Blackburn drew with Norwich.

Forest sit precariously after Burton won the East Midlands derby.

Rotherham look doomed, with their goal difference stretching out to minus-50 in their loss at Molineux.

It was business as usual for the top three in League Two, with leaders Doncaster, Plymouth and third-placed Portsmouth all winning without conceding a goal.

Rovers saw off Cheltenham 2-0, Argyle beat play-off chasing Mansfield by the same scoreline, while Pompey smashed Colchester 4-0.

The chasers did not so fare so well, Luton losing to Stevenage with defeats for Carlisle and Exeter too.

At the other end of the table Newport came from behind to beat Crewe and give Mike Flynn victory in his first game in charge - just their sixth in the league all season. But the Welsh side are still bottom and nine points from safety. 

There was also a vital victory for Notts County, who beat fellow strugglers Hartlepool.

No doubt about the comeback of the day in League One.

Gillingham trailed Scunthorpe 2-0 with less than 15 minutes remaining. Nine minutes - and three converted penalties from Josh Wright later - and the Gills have a 3-2 win in the bag. The Kent side only had three shots on target.

The big promotion game saw Fleetwood brushed aside 4-2 by an Adam Le Fondre-inspired Bolton, who go up to third.

Bradford continue their promotion push with a 2-0 victory over Coventry and their new manager Mark Robins.

Elsewhere there were important wins for Bristol Rovers and Oxford, while the basement battle between Port Vale and Swindon saw Vale edge a five-goal thriller.

This was the moment Bristol City celebrated a vital win at Wigan, that with Blackburn's draw at Norwich hoists them out of the bottom three. Aden Flint is in there being mobbed for his late goal.

• Cauley Woodrow's free-kick earns Burton an east midlands derby win against Nottingham Forest.
• Jonathan Kodjia kept up his fine scoring form - up to 15 for the season - with two goals for Aston Villa, who beat a Sheffield Wednesday down to 10 men and with manager Carlos Carvahal sent to the stands.
• Huddersfield keep up their push for the play-offs, beating Brentford thanks to Rajiv van la Parra's goal.
• Preston turned in one of the performances of the day to shock play-off battlers Reading 3-0 at Deepdale. Tom Barkhuizen's double and Daryl Horgan's effort sealed the win.
• Wolves' Andi Weimann came up with the crucial goal to see off brave bottom side Rotherham in a 1-0 win.
• Bristol City pushed Wigan further into the mire while boosting their survival hopes thanks to Aden Flint's late winner.
• Tom Lawrence rescued a point for Ipswich at Barnsley, while Lukas Jutkiewicz did likewise for Birmingham at Cardiff.
• Leeds and QPR played out the division's only goalless draw. Boo!

Norwich caretaker boss Alan Irvine begins his spell in charge with a point, although their winless run now extends to six games.

Cameron Jerome scored either side of Lucas Joao's double to deny Blackburn three points they need to pull away from the Championship danger zone.

Brave effort from the home side amid supporter dissent and playing most of the game with 10 men after Mitchell Dijks' red card.

Ryan Sessegnon's double and a belter from Tom Cairney enough to keep Fulham's play-off bid well and truly alive.

Daryl Murphy's consolation late on had little impact on the flow of the game, and it might have been worse for Newcastle had Tim Reem not missed a late spot-kick.

Top two battle remains wide open after Brighton's win against Derby last night.

Tom Lawrence is the Ipswich Town hero as he stubs home a Brett Pitman pass at the back-post to surely give Ipswich a precious point at Oakwell.

Scunthorpe were set to go second in League One. But three, yes three, penalties by Josh Wright in eight minutes and a two-goal lead has been well and truly blown.

Gillingham are now 3-2 ahead. Josh Wright is a former Scunthorpe player too.
