Jermain Defoe and Lee Cattermole politely ask the referee why that was a red card as the teams come off.

Ander Herrera is being booed with every touch now, not that he did anything to particularly influence that red card, and the home fans have something to enjoy when he lashes a shot well over the bar.

It's a straight leg challenge and it's the height of the challenge that gets Larsson sent off.

It's happened right between the referee and the assistant. It's maybe a little harsh but I can certainly see why given the height of the challenge.

That was Seb Larsson's first red card in his 278th Premier League appearance. He actually won the ball and caught Ander Herrera on his follow through.

Sunderland's chances take another kicking as Seb Larsson is sent-off, a straight red.

He's applauded off, always a bizarre sight in football.

He goes in over the top of the ball on Ander Herrera, it's not the best tackle but I'm not sure it warrants a straight red card. It wasn't two-footed or particularly aggressive in nature.

Whatever I think, all that matters is that referee Craig Pawson shows a red card and Sunderland are down to 10...

On seeing that chance again, Eric Bailly just clipped the heels of Victor Anichebe as he got the shot away. Should that have been a penalty?

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 40 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United

Sunderland have barely threatened since going behind but here's a real chance, out of nothing! The ball comes to Victor Anichebe inside the area, he uses all of his width to hold off Eric Bailly and turn, getting a shot away which Sergio Romero saves bravely!

That goal from Zlatan has given Manchester United a huge lift. There's a fragility about Sunderland and they're lacking in confidence.

The first goal is important in any game but when you're really struggling and you haven't scored in a while, when you go behind you have a mountain to climb and it really has knocked the stuffing out of Sunderland and the crowd.

If you're on Luke Shaw watch, he made a good overlapping run which allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to turn inside in the first place but from there it was all about the big number nine.

Bryan Oviedo is persuaded to his feet by the Sunderland medical staff. Perhaps they think that he can in fact carry on?

No, he's off. On comes Javier Manquillo.

Bryan Oviedo is done. He cleared the ball and felt something in his hamstring, immediately signalling that he has to come off.

Rashida: Yet again, Zlatan is rescuing United. There's no chemistry in this team at all! A one man team personified!

Desmond Oguda: Ibrahimovic is a total football package. What a man! what a strike! super-player this

Mwalimu Pedro: Without Zlatan's goals me thinks we'd be battling with Sunderland to get out of the relegation zone

  14. CLOSE!published at 36 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United

Almost the goal we predicted before kick-off as Luke Shaw crosses for Marouane Fellaini, but he can't quite bundle the ball over the line.

Shaw's overlapping run was strong but he wasn't tracked at all. Even the laziest 5-a-side player knows that if you don't track a runner, you're in trouble.

Brilliant from Ibrahimovic. He's been quiet so far but it was a good ball up for him from Herrera. He holds off Billy Jones, shapes it inside left and just curls it in the inside netting.

Brilliant from Ibrahimovic. The Lion is roaring.

David Moyes was out to the sideline to cajole his troops in the aftermath of that goal but you wonder how much belief there really is. Paul Pogba laces a shot straight at Jordan Pickford.

Zlatan finds the bottom cornerpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 9 April 2017

    Sunderland 0-1 Manchester United

Jordan Pickford had just made a very good save to deny Jesse Lingard but moments later he is beaten from 20 yards by Zlatan Ibrahimovic .

That's his 17th league goal of the season, and 28th in all. He rolled his defender and with minimal backlift curls in an effort which beats Pickford on the bounce and nestles in the corner. Could the keeper have done more?It was a very accurate strike.

Game's opening up now, Jesse Lingard wonders through the middle of a suspiciously complicit defence and gets a shot off, side-footed into the corner but Jordan Pickford keeps it out.

SHOT! An actual, proper shot. Lee Cattermole drills an effort in from 25 yards, plenty of swerve and Sergio Romero has to make the save.

It was pretty much straight at him but a good effort nonetheless.

And then Sunderland find Jermain Defoe breaking in behind, he slices wide and he was offside anyway.

    But that's much more positive.
