"It's been scrappy so far, but there have been chances for both sides. It's not exactly been a game for those who like their football on the pure side."

Good approach play by Kevin Mirallas, who tees up Ross Barkley to shoot from 25 yards. The shot is blocked. Mirallas, unperturbed, wins a corner. Leighton Baines plays it over; Burnley, after two or three attempts, finally managed to clear their lines.

Approaching half an hour gone at Goodison Park. According to Opta, there have been 14 fouls already - seven apiece.

Idrissa Gueye is responsible for foul number 14 as he clatters into Burnley full-back Stephen Ward by the touchline, and collects the game's first booking.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Tom Heaton is off his line to deal with the ball in, Idrissa Gueye's follow-up shot is blocked by the thigh of Joey Barton, and Burnley break to win a corner. Everton defend it with rather more certainty than the last one they faced.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Time for Kevin Mirallas to make a nuisance of himself and try to get Everton on the front foot again. He presses Matt Lowton into an error by the corner flag and wins a free-kick for Ronald Koeman's side.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Burnley's midfield is doing a good job of pressing Everton into errors at the moment. Tom Davies is forced backwards as Jeff Hendrick chases him down; eventually, the home side lose possession.

In fact, Everton look all over the place at the back at the moment. First goalkeeper Joel Robles flaps at a high cross, and then, from Burnley's next attack, Matt Lowton's low outswinging cross runs all the way through the corridor of uncertainty and out the door into the car park of missed opportunities. Three Burnley players in the centre put hands to heads and think about what might have been.

And from George Boyd's corner, Ross Barkley makes his first big contribution. Everton's attacking midfielder is superbly placed to nod Michael Keane's goal-bound header off the line and save a certain goal. Great work from Barkley - not such great work from those in blue around him.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Burnley free-kick at the other end, central, 30 yards from goal. Robbie Brady, who scored a cracker against Chelsea in February, takes it, and it loops off Mason Holgate in the wall for a corner.

Bit of a nervous moment for Burnley's defence follows, though. Mason Holgate, in Seamus Coleman style, hares down the right to loop over a cross, which Tom Heaton can only palm at through the crowd. Tom Davies tries to fashion an opening from the loose ball, but Burnley have the numbers back.

Then Idrissa Gueye hits one from about 25 yards, but Heaton - 31 today - gathers comfortably.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

By this time at Goodison Park last Sunday, Everton and Leicester had already provided us with three goals. Burnley's past four matches have provided a grand total of three goals. So far, the immovable object is withstanding the irresistible force.

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

A spell of pressure for Burnley ended with Joey Barton steering a shot at goal from a 30 yards; Joel Robles gathers easily enough.

Seconds later, a nervy moment for the home defence. Phil Jagielka's back pass doesn't quite have enough on it, and Robles has to sprint from his goal as Ashley Barnes closes in. Barnes takes a whack from the goalkeeper, who does rather leave his foot in after getting the ball, but the striker quickly back to his feet.

It looks like over the next few years a lot of money will be made available to Ronald Koeman. With that backing, the challenge is to break into the top six and then push up towards the top four. Everton have been there and thereabouts for so long.

First chance of the game goes to the Premier League's top scorer. Everton's Romelu Lukaku is unattended 12 yards out as Mason Holgate gets down the right and squares to him, but the shot is tame and straight at Tom Heaton. A worrying moment for the visitors.

Early Burnley free-kick about 40 yards further forward is cleared to Michael Keane, whose shot deflects behind off team-mate Ben Mee - unseen by referee Mark Clattenburg, who wrongly gives a corner. Robbie Brady swings it over, Clattenburg sees a bit of Burnley pushing and an opportunity to correct his error. Free-kick to Everton.

Ross Barkley is quickly into the game - a foul on boyhood Evertonian Joey Barton gives Burnley a free-kick about 30 yards from their own goal.

  20. KICK-OFFpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 15 April 2017

    Everton 0-0 Burnley

Everton have won their past seven home league matches; Burnley have not won a competitive away game since 7 May last year. Home banker? Let's see.

Mark Clattenburg is the referee; Everton are in blue, Burnley in claret and blue. If you're watching this in black and white, it's probably time to get a new television.
