Joshua King's shot off the woodwork was the closest we came to a goal in that half.

Bournemouth had the better off it with a shot cleared off the line as well, although Defoe failed to capitalise on a good chance.

But as things stand Sunderland are staying up for another week.

Remember they have to match Hull's result (currently 0-0 against Southampton) to prevent their relegation being confirmed.

And it comes to nothing. They play the corner short but the delivery is poor.

Defoe then fires way over moments later.

Bournemouth have probably had the better chances in this game.

They look to have much more variety in their game than Sunderland. Joshua King, Benik Afobe, Ryan Fraser and Marc Pugh have all looked good going forward.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are very one dimensional, looking to find Defoe as early as possible.

We're into two minutes of added time.

  9. CLOSE!published at 42 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

    Sunderland are living dangerously.

Firstly Javier Manquillo blocks a shot from seven yards from Benik Afobe before Joshua King's shot is cleared off the line by Donald Love. Both teams are knocking on the door but yet to find a way through.

As things stand Sunderland will hang on to their Premier League status for another week.

With this game and Hull City's match at Southampton both goalless Sunderland will be 12 points behind the Tigers with four games left.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 34 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

There's an odd atmosphere around the Stadium of Light this afternoon. There's a smattering of empty seats and you can't really blame the Sunderland fans with their team rock-bottom of the league. They have not been out of the bottom three since 10 September.

On the pitch Lewis Cook is the first man to receive a yellow card for a cynical foul on Borini.

Sunderland are starting to grow into this now. Didier Ndong heads the ball over the Bournemouth defence where Jermain Defoe runs between the two centre-backs but he can only divert his volleyed effort straight at Boruc.

Ndong has been the busiest player in the Sunderland side, putting in plenty of effort in central midfield.

Defoe is now appealing for a penalty for handball after his shot is blocked by Simon Francis.

Stuart Attwell isn't having any of it though and neither am I. It may have hit an arm but from close range.

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

Moments before that shot from King, Jermain Defoe fired over for Sunderland from the edge of the box.

A reminder he has not scored for Sunderland since the start of February.

Fabio Borini has just taken a nasty knock on the ankle after a tackle from Harry Arter but after treatment he looks OK to continue.

Josh King uses his pace, gets to just inside the box and it somehow hits the crossbar and the post and stays out.

It was a wonderful piece of skill from a player who is in fine form right now, and how it stayed out I have no idea.

  16. CLOSE!published at 22 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

    How has this stayed out?

I told you Joshua King was in form and he's just rattled both crossbar and post with one effort here. He is on the left edge of the box and floats a curling shot to the back post but - with Jordan Pickford rooted - it came off the bar, then onto the upright and back into the Sunderland keeper's arms.

So close to a 12th league goal of 2017 for King.

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

The visitors have had 69% of the possession here in the opening period.

They start the game seven points clear of the drop in 13th and Eddie Howe still insists they need another win to ensure survival.

They won't get it like that though. Adam Smith lets the ball slip under his boot for a Sunderland throw - cue sarcastic cheers from the home fans.

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

Sunderland look so frantic at the back.

Bournemouth's Charlie Daniels looks to be going nowhere in the Sunderland box but John O'Shea just can't get the ball away from his feet.

None of the defenders want to make a tackle until eventually Jordan Pickford drops on the ball.

    Sunderland 0-0 Bournemouth

Fabio Borini has received a lot of criticism in recent weeks from Sunderland fans but he's had their first shot here.

It's a swerving effort from outside the area that Artur Boruc does well to save and Jermain Defoe can't adjust his feet to benefit on the rebound.

Phil Bayley: Moyes has a strong CV? You'd have to be mad to hire him, utter failure at Sunderland, Sociedad and United!

Michael Reid: Moyes gave up as soon as he got the job, you don't start by moaning about a relegation fight in your first week

Spike Mewl: Leave Moyes to work his magic in the Championship. Sunderland will come again
