United are still living off their luck at the back though.

Jordan Ayew hammers a low, hard shot in from a tight angle and the ball very nearly breaks for Gylfi Sigurdsson off the shins of David de Gea.

The Iceland international's reflex flick of his boot was only a yard or so away as the rebound came fizzing back out at him.

Manchester United are getting closer. Anthony Martial's shot might easily have taken a deflection and gone in, plus Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford were both running in for the rebound.

That is the 2015-vintage Antony Martial.

The United attacker drifts in off the left flank, leaving a Swansea defender for dead with a sway of his hips.

He fires in off his instep. It is a meaty hit from 15 yards, but too central and Lukasz Fabianski is down to grasp it at the second attempt.

Michael Devlin: No team can turn a fast break into a slow plod like this iteration of Man Utd. 

Ben: Sigurdsson could play for one of the top six in my opinion - underrated talent. 

Juan Mata trots out for a warm-up alongside the rest of the Manchester United substitutes and is given a warm round of applause from the home fans.

He responds in kind.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also among the replacements.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has form in this fixture, scoring the winner in Louis van Gaal's first competitive match in charge back in 2014.

The Iceland international whips a decent shot at goal from a free-kick. David de Gea has it comfortably covered though.

The Manchester United goalkeeper's attempt to bowl out is intercepted though.

Marcus Rashford had pulled into space behind and would have had a free shot at goal, but Wayne Rooney wasn't to know that. 

Manchester United are starting to look a bit more composed now, but Swansea are still in it.

Manchester United's full-backs can both deliver quality into the box.

Antonio Valencia has the first crack, with Alfie Mawson flicking clear.

Ashely Young's centre is just half a yard too high for Wayne Rooney. The England striker can't keep his header down. 

The flanks look the most promising route for the hosts though.

Tom West: Is it just me or are the set piece takers strange? Blind on FKs, Rashford on corners? Someone better surely. Rooney?   

argonaut: Oh look Swansea are playing good football and raised their game because it's United. Never seen that before.

More jitters and stutters at the back from the hosts.

Marcus Rashford heads only thin air as he tries to clear. Fortunately for him, Fernando Llorente is put off by his leap and fails to make a clean connection as the ball drops to him six yards out.

A few mumbles and grumbles around Old Trafford as Daley Blind mis-places a pass a moment later.

That was a brilliant chance for Jesse Lingard - no doubt he was onside. 

This is a great game so far. 

Finally United start to shake a leg.

Antony Martial's clipped through-ball picks out a clever dart from Jesse Lingard.

But Lukasz Fabianski is out quickly as the £100,000-a-week man tries to control and blocks with his shins.

Swansea have been by far the brighter team - they are doing everything right. 

This is as good as we've seen from them this season.

Fernando Llorente twists clear of Eric Bailly far too easily and David de Gea has to be alert to get a hand to his curling shot.

The goalkeeper bangs his gloves together and demands more from his team-mates.
