  1. Rowett returnspublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Birmingham v Derby (15:00 BST)

    Gary RowettImage source, Rex Features

Former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett returns to St Andrew's today for the first time since his surprise sacking in December.

Since he left, Gianfranco Zola's Blues have won just twice and are just six points above the drop zone.

Rowett has already won twice in three games at Derby.

But the Rams need to win today, realistically, to keep any faint hopes they have of making a late charge for the top six alive.

It will be very interesting to see what sort of reception the home fans give their former manager...

  2. Wilder returns to Sixfieldspublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Northampton v Sheff Utd (15:00 BST)

    Chris WilderImage source, Rex Features

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder can see his side clinch promotion to the Championship today.

And they could do it at the home of his old club, Northampton Town.

Last season, Wilder was celebrating the League Two title at Sixfields.

It would be quite a story if he was celebrating there again today on his first return to the club.

  3. Team newspublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Burton v Villa: The Brewers change four, with Kyle McFadzean, Lloyd Dyer, Cauley Woodrow and Michael Kightly starting; Villa name an unchanged starting XI.

Leeds V Preston: Leeds make three changes, as Kemar Roofe, Alfonso Pedraza and Ronaldo Vieira all start; In-form Preston make one change after their 5-0 win over Bristol City as Jordan Hugill has a knock, so Marnick Vermijl starts.

Cardiff v Brentford: Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has made six changes, with Allan McGregor passed fit to start; Konstantin Kerschbaumer is recalled by Brentford boss Dean Smith, the Bees' only change.

Norwich v Reading: The Canaries have defenders Mitchell Dijks and Ivo Pinto back in their starting XI; Garath McCleary comes in as one of two Reading changes, with Lewis Grabban starting against his former side.

Wigan v Rotherham: Wigan make three changes for the visit of bottom side Rotherham, with Gabriel Obertan returning to the team; Alex Bray replaces Jon Taylor in the Millers team, but there's no place for Lee Frecklington.

Fulham v Ipswich: Chris Martin is back for Fulham after missing the loss to Derby, while Scott Parker is on the bench; Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy makes one change, with Tommy Smith replacing Steven Taylor, while Tom Lawrence is back on the bench.

  5. Team newspublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Blackburn v Barnsley:  Only five of the Blackburn side that lost at Reading on Tuesday keep their starting places, with Wes Brown and Lucas Joao among the players coming in. Barnsley bring in Ryan Hedges, Ryan Kent and George Moncur for Adam Hammill, Alex Mowatt and Tom Bradshaw.

Bristol City v Wolves:  Bristol City make four changes, with Lee Tomlin one of the players dropping out and Matty Taylor starting up front with Tammy Abraham. Seventeen-year-old Morgan Gibbs-White makes his first league start for Wolves, with Ivan Cavaleiro dropping to the bench and record signing Helder Costa not involved.

Nottingham Forest v Huddersfield:  Eric Lichaj, Joe Worrall and Jamie Ward start for Forest, with Michael Mancienne and Britt Assombalonga dropping to the bench and Danny Fox suspended. Huddersfield make one change from Wednesday's win over Norwich, as Tareiq Holmes-Dennis replaces the rested Chris Lowe.

After a mini-recovery of sorts, Bristol City's season suffered another almighty stutter this week - including a 5-0 hammering at Preston on Tuesday.

But owner Steve Lansdown has been telling BBC Radio Bristol this afternoon that he has "always felt we're on track".

"I’d be lying if I said we hadn’t had conversations about whether we should part company with Lee," he said.

"But Lee Johnson will be head coach of this football club for as long as I want him to be. I believe in him and his ability. We’re going through a tough time but I’m going to help him see it through."

Get Involved - your promotion memoriespublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    #bbcefl

Today, with two EFL sides able to clinch promotion, we want to hear your memories of your club going up.

How do you best recall seeing or following your side get over the line?

I was once stuck at a village fete, playing in a band, while nervously waiting for news on a final-day decider... One of those commitments you foolishly makes weeks beforehand based on a pessimistic assumption that your side surely won't go up...

In an age before live text coverage and social media, my Dad was (correctly) missing said gig to listen to the radio in the car. It is fair to say I was a bit distracted from the music when he finally re-entered the audience, pumping his fists with a huge grin on his face. Football, eh?

But I'm sure you all have some better stories than that - let's hear them via #bbcefl on Twitter.

Exeter v Newport (now 15:45 BST)

Because of an accident on the M5, the League Two game between Exeter City and Newport County will now kick-off at the later time of 15:45 BST.

Nottm Forest v Huddersfield (15:00 BST)

    David WagnerImage source, Rex Features

How about this for a big game at both ends of the table?!

David Wagner's third-placed Huddersfield are trying to keep their slim hopes of automatic promotion alive, having lost two of their past three games. Anything but a win today would surely leave them having to settle for a play-off semi-final in May.

Meanwhile, hosts Nottingham Forest are searching for their first win under Mark Warburton, after two draws and a defeat so far sees them in 20th, two points above the relegation zone.

Nottingham Forest in the third tier? That prospect is a very real one all of a sudden, unless the Reds can start picking up wins - they've won just once since 4 February.

    Championship top six

At the other end, the top two are looking well set for top-flight football next season, barring an unexpected and unprecedented collapse, especially after Brighton's win last night.

That said, Huddersfield do have games in hand and could narrow the gap between themselves and the leaders with a big result at struggling Nottingham Forest this afternoon.

Meanwhile, in the play-off mix, Leeds host an in-form Preston side today, who are still in with a chance of top-six finish themselves, while Reading are away to Norwich.

    Championship bottom six

    Bottom sixImage source, BBC Sport

All the sides between 23rd and 17th in the Championship are at home this afternoon and it could be a pivotal day.

Just two points separate Blackburn - currently beneath the trap door - and perilously-placed Bristol City and Nottingham Forest.

Just above the bottom six, but by no means safe yet, on 46 points are Gianfranco Zola's Birmingham City, who are at home to former boss Gary Rowett's new side Derby this afternoon. That could be tasty.

And lowly Wigan simply cannot afford anything but a win at home to already-relegated Rotherham.

Here are this afternoon's fixtures affecting the Championship relegation battle (all 15:00 BST):

    • Birmingham City v Derby County
    • Blackburn v Barnsley
    • Bristol City v Wolves
    • Burton Albion v Aston Villa
    • Nottm Forest v Huddersfield
    • Wigan v Rotherham
  12. Chance for Donny to go uppublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Doncaster v Mansfield (15:00 BST)

At home to Mansfield this afternoon, Doncaster Rovers will seal a return to League One if they win, regardless of what happens in other games.

Donny can actually lose today and still clinch promotion if fourth-placed Stevenage lose too, but only provided that fifth-placed Luton don't win at Barnet.

A draw is enough for Rovers today if The Boro don't win at Colchester.

  13. Sky Blues facing the droppublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

    Coventry v Peterborough (15:00 BST)

    Coventry CityImage source, Rex Features

EFL Trophy winners Coventry City could be condemned to relegation this afternoon.

If they lose at home to Peterborough, the Sky Blues will be mathematically relegated, no matter what happens elsewhere.

If they draw, their fate could also be sealed, if Port Vale, Gillingham and Oldham all avoid defeat, or if two of those sides avoid defeat but 21st-placed Shrewsbury earn a win.

Even a win might not be enough to save Coventry but, should they get one, only wins for the Latics, the Gills and Vale could send the Sky Blues down today.

There is also a scenario by which 23rd-placed Chesterfield could go down this afternoon, if they were to lose at home to Port Vale, while Oldham and Gillingham both win and 17th-placed Bury avoid defeat.

... Everyone got that? Cool. It's simple really...

  14. Blades bid to clinch promotionpublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Northampton v Sheff Utd (15:00 BST)

Sheffield United fansImage source, Rex Features

Put simply, a win for League One leaders Sheffield United today would see them clinch promotion to the Championship.

Failing that, the Blades will go up today if they match or better third-placed Fleetwood's result at Oldham.

So, if the Cod Army lose, Sheffield United are up regardless of how they get on at Sixfields.

  15. Coming up laterpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 8 April 2017

Sheff Wed v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

Newcastle will bid to replace Brighton at the top of the second tier from 17:30 BST in today's late game.

We'll have dedicated live text commentary of that game later.

But, before then, we have a huge array of 15:00 BST matters to attend to.

And there is plenty on the line...

The weekend's EFL games got under way last night and it turned into another excellent evening in Brighton's superb season.
